I started a new job in September but told them at my interview that I had a trip to Vegas planned in october for my birthday and they were cool about letting me go. Just tell them you have prior engagements and stand to lose money by canceling. If they ask what the reasons are you can always tell them it's a personal matter. Plain and simple... say you have a prior commitment...

I'd just stick to the honesty is the best policy theory and tell him you're going to Cincy for a Buffett show and that you made your plans and spent your money long before taking the job. Judging by the boss' reaction, you'll be able to see what your chances are for getting time off for future shows. And, if he's a Parrothead, it might save you a great deal of embarassment when you find yourself puking on his shoes in the parking lot after the show

Thats crazy.... perfect designated driver! :(
Seriously! :D

And by the way, during grad school, I always checked the syllabus against the concert schedule and have requested several make up exams in order to be able to go to a concert. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I would have negotiated for 2 days off when I accepted the job. I was stupid not to!

I've done that several times myself. Most places are reasonable about things like that if you tell them ahead of time.

And if they're *not* reasonable about something like that...are you really sure you want to work there? :)

I agree with the "prior engagement" idea........most employers are pretty flexible (and sometimes human... ).
