Speaking in general terms I think studio recordings edge out live ones iin cases like Sgt. Pepper's or Pet Sounds where studiocraft comes into play as a tool.

Heck he does that on Live By The Bay so I don't think it's so recent.
I myself prefer when artists do not sing their songs exactly like they do on the studio versions.

I usually prefer studio versions of songs for repeated listens but there are some songs I do prefer live like OPH and Love and Luck. What I like about Jimmy's older studio recordings is that they have that laid back more acoustic feel to them which I prefer over the large band production sound. I can't stand Margaritaville live when compared to the studio version.
