f2cdlzrd,
Obviously your name is derivative from the JB album, but to be honest with you...do you actually enjoy the ablum?? Honestly, it is probably the ONE album that I would throw into the ocean rather than hold on to...just personal opinion though!
PHINS UP!!

We sailed from the port of indecision
Young and wild with oh so much to learn
Days turn into years as we tried to fool our fears, But to the port of indecision I returned.

Take Another Road is a great song, and is one that I can listen to over and over again, however, there rest of the album just seems to stink of trashy mid to late 80's music. An era in which I wouldn't mind forgetting (i.e. -- New Kids on the Block, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice...I could go on and on...). I still have both Off to see the Lizard and Hot Water, but they don't get the regular rotation...maybe once or twice before a show just to brush up. But hey! To each their own!!

One of the things I find great about Buffett though is the "Full Circle" he is going through...from his country roots to finding the cool tranquil waters of the carribean and who knows where he will end everything...I kinda like to think he will go back to playing small venues (similar to the Fox Theatre from "You Had To Be There") before he calls it quits...although I hope that NEVER happens!!

After much debate, I think I'll have to go with "You Had to Be There" for my selection if I were stranded on a deserted island...and I know Jahfin, that this is probably the last thing in which I would be worrying about, but nonetheless for mindless banter...that is the album I would choose! All I have to say is one thing (and those of you that know the "You Had to Be There" album will get this):
NICE VEST HUH?!?!

I believe a lot of people were thrown off by the "country" album License To Chill in the aspect that Buffett has been a mixture of several styles of music all along. He even had another of his albums heralded as a "return to country" several years back called Riddles in the Sand. It, like License To Chill isn't exclusively "country" either but a mixture of all the musical styles Buffett has been using all along. I've seen some even refer to the "before the beach" era albums as Buffett's "country roots" but even that isn't entirely accurate as I hear a much more dominant folk influence than I do anything on those records, even a hint of bluegrass in places ("Cumberland High Dilemna").Fins21 wrote:One of the things I find great about Buffett though is the "Full Circle" he is going through...from his country roots to finding the cool tranquil waters of the carribean and who knows where he will end everything...I kinda like to think he will go back to playing small venues (similar to the Fox Theatre from "You Had To Be There") before he calls it quits...although I hope that NEVER happens!!

Jahfin,
Is that just an alias where the truth is that you are actually JIMMY BUFFETT HIMSELF?!?! You sure do know alot about him. I'm impressed. Have you been a fan for a long time?? or just do your research??

You must be new here. Believe it or not, I've been accused on more than one occasion at this site of not being a Jimmy Buffett fan. This even though I frequently take part in the Jimmy Buffett area of the board, include his albums in the What's Everyone Listening To? thread, and heap praise (as well as critical disdain where I see fit) on his albums.Fins21 wrote:Jahfin,

To answer your question I've been a fan in good standing since the early to mid-70s. I'm just more of a fan of Buffett the singer/songwriter than I am of the modern Buffett who has more in common with Don Ho than the beach bum troubadour image that first attracted me to his music what now seems like eons ago. Some consider that opinion heresy, I consider it honesty. Unfortunately that attitude doesn't always fly too well here at BN but I don't really give a shlt about that and don't plan to start now.

"Better" may be too strong of a word but yes, I do agree. Of course there was no way Buffett could stay true to that part of his muse forever. Corporate shill Jimmy Buffett is better than no Jimmy Buffett at all.OystersandBeer wrote:I think most people would agree with you that "old" Buffett is better than "new" Buffett, musically.
