I don't believe so. Fool Button was on SOASOAS and I think Fingers had played with Jimmy prior to that.

He did. In fact, I'm pretty sure they'd been playing together since before
White Sportcoat (at least according to what Buffett said when he and Fingers guested on TNN's Texas Connection, hosted by Jerry Jeff Walker).

I believe what was meant is whether or not the subject matter of the song is about how Fingers and Jimmy met.
I don't think that's how they met but it makes a good verse.
Now I was sittin' in the corner of a very laid back bar
A little three piece band playin' on the stand
Not knowin' what lay in store
In a flash a man with a hat and a harmonica stormed the stage
The crowd went berserk, the band said what a jerk
As he went into a blues rampage
It was a fool palace
Double knit on parade
They pushed the fool button
As the skinny boy played and played

Former Coral Reefer, Greg `Fingers' Taylor recalls the early days in an interview with Diddy Wah Diddy, a Mississippi Blues newsletter. "In about 1972 I met Buffett. He was playing at the Hub, the Union Building at the University of Southern Mississippi. I was the local harp player, and would play with everybody. So I was just wandering through the Hub one night, and there was this guy with long blonde hair and a mustache playing `Why Don't We Get Drunk and Screw' to about five little old ladies on break from their night class. I didn't know anything about him. I enjoyed some of the songs I was hearing, and of course I wanted to sit in. So we got up there and it was just sort of a chemistry, just one of those things. I think he had been looking for somebody else to go on the road with him. It's sort of lonely out there on the road. The next day I was driving him to his parents house in Mobile, the sun was coming up, and Jimmy was singing, there was a bonding that occurred there at that point; we knew that we were going to play music together somewhere down the line."

So they met AT the college, but not necessarily while they were in college??

Ah... now I understand the question. I was thinking musical timeline rather than lyrical translation.

I don't think either one of them were IN college very long!
For some reason, I seem to recall Jimmy's GPA reading like a sobriety test: decimal point sumthin sumthin

Ahh yes...well Jimmy was in college long enough to pledge a fraternity. Although he never got in. I recall reading in "A Pirate Looks at Fifty" that it was a fraternity brother that taught him the simple chords of how to play the guitar...and THAT's where it all began...

Didn't he stay in long enough to get a degree in journalism?

He stayed in long enough to stay
out of 'Nam
Actually he wound up with enough credits for a degree in a double major - journalism was one, and I
believe history was the second.

He went to three schools...flunked out of Auburn (where he pledged), attended a junior college for a while, and then graduated from Univ of Southern Mississippi, I believe. It's all in APLA50. And yes, he stayed in school to avoid Vietnam...and when he got drafted upon graduation, he flunked the physical...had an ulcer.
