I have had a sun stroke before and ever since then I hardly sweat at all anymore, which is not good. I have to be very careful in the heat. A spray bottle with water is always good, and you can get those bands to wear around your neck that are chilled beforehand. Also people at the Rangers game were using some type of sprayer hooked up to an iced bottle in their ice chest, said they bought it at Wal Mart. And wearing a hat to cover your head (straw is more breathable) helps alot. Wearing light colored clothing helps also.

I found Bullfrog Suncsreen to be the best. It was developed by Surfers. and it works. Used to be hard to find but it seems to be wiely available.
A little goes A LONG way. I have used out offshore and never got any sun at all.

When possible keep out of the heat during the hottest part of the days when the heat index in high. Not always practical , I know.
Cool water showers.....can help if there is no pool....

Light colored clothg and a hat tha can breath and a good brim ....

Don't drink alcohol in the heat. I can dehydrate you.

There three levels of heat heat illnesses.....

Heat Stress is very common and easily treated. muscle cramps etc.

Heat Prostation is more slighty more serious but can be treated pretty easily.
Heat Stroke is SERIOUS AND DEADLY and CAN AND DOES KILL

You can search out heat illness and find other symptoms and treatments.

DRINK LOTS AND LOTS of water. You can a little lemon or lime to the water. you can drink juices toom but plain old water is the absolutely the best thing to drink in the heat.
Some of the sports drinks don't even come close. Some are very high in sodium and are really bad fo people on low or no sodium diets.

If you notice your urine has a dark color and a dark smell you need more water ASAP.

If person has stopped sweating get them out of the heat immediately and get them to take in water and juice if possible.if they are vomiting, there is a mixture to give them to drink and only let them drink in small sips, not large gulps.
If a person starts over heating losen their clothing if it restrictive m so air can get to them.

Take a bandana or towel and place in cooler and wet it and place it on the back of their neck. replawet and reapply as it evaporates. Most of the body's heat is release through the head and neck. Evaporation is what cools us and why we sweat.

Something no one mentioned is good quality sunglasses, that have high UVA and UVB protection.

Thanks so much PHarmgirl and Sam!

The suggestions for cooling off are great. I love those mister things with the ice chest. Many times we can keep working if we take a break and cool off (unless we have special considerations like PHarmgirl--heat stroke had to be scary!)

Also, will include something about good glasses. I just went out for a 4-mile walk with and made sure I got in before 10.

Sam, I researched some about humidity and sweating (in Texas) and found this:

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/fwd/heatindex/heat1.html

Temps today only 85 and humidity is only 58%, so evaporation was pretty cooling. (45% is ideal.)I swear the humidity in Texas can be a killer. Sometimes you feel like you're in a greenhouse.

Oh yes, I wore my big ole wrap UVEX glasses. :)

Sad to say that I grabbed a diet coke to rehydrate. Why can't I break THAT habit!?

And, TJ!! You must know I've been seen in the swing with a cold Coors Light after mowing, etc., wishing I could jump in the lake.

Most welcome. I was busy running a couple things on my puter so I could not get back correct the typos for you.
You got the general idea I hope.

Thank you for the links!!!
They have these little battery powered fans that people can use, as well as the spray/mist bottles that I think someone mentioned before.... when you spray the mist, the trigger you pull powers the fan. So no power needed for them.

LOL I live in Georgia on the coast and the humidity and heat here can be fearsome..... they will tell parentsto brings inside and for people to stay indoors if at all possible.
If you must be outside be sure to take freqyent breaks and to drink plenty of water

There was an article in the magazine "RUNNER'S WORLD" ( Spring of 83)some years ago that did a test to find out the best drink to drink after a long work out ..... their conclusions and findings were that water was the best ti drink..... and then they said actually ONE -TWO ( NO MORE) THAN THAT) LITE beers after working out were actually a bit better.

That is after a work out though.......and something to think about. Most people do not drink enough water while outside....in the heat. You may not want any more but you must keep hydrated .....

I hope this helps you out.

conversely you may want to research "hypothermia" which is just the opposite of the heat related illnesses. It may give you a perspective you have not thought of

Here's a link to the women's Columbia sportswear sun protection tops: http://www.columbia.com/SubCategory.asp ... wAll=false

Another rule of thumb...if you're in the heat and wait until you're thirsty to drink, you've waited too long (you're already getting dehydrated).

In the heat, water is always my primary drink. If it's hot and I'm playing a round of golf, I find a gatorade and a cup of ice can help to sustain my energy on the back nine after only water on the front.

I really like Coppertone's Bug and Sun- it's an insect repellant/sunblock combo (I'm a mosquito magnet).

Also, at the Alpine show in 03, we kept washcloths in the cooler- we would go play in the parking lot, and as soon as you came back, someone would throw one of those on your back. It was way too cold for a split second, but then felt fantastic!!
