I have to agree the animals are raised as FOOD ITEMS. PEOPLE EAT THEM.

When Legislatures put all of animals that we consider to be food above the RIGHTS odf the people ....there is clearly something wrong. I AN NOT saying animals should not be treated any less than humane..... I want to know what these Legislatures and elected officials are doing about the inhumane treatment of humans! Is a duck or a chicken more important than a human? Certainly not in my opinion when it comes to my loved ones and people I care about!!!

We have judges letting pediophiles off easy because they are too short and for other reasons...........meanwhile........ducks, chickens, pigs, other food item animals are granted more RIGHTS than the humans are.

I do believe in fair treatment and quality treatment of ALL aninmals.
Perhaps if our legislature was so as equally concerned and interested in the treatment of the victims of crimes including violent crimes..... instead of the well being of food items....then PERHAPS they might have a point.

Until they actually start caring about the people that elected them and they are supposed to represent......REMEMBER TO VOTE....and eat duck and chicken and any other food animal product you may want. The ducks and other animals did not vote them into office.
Let them know this. Ducks don't vote!!!

Remember the Camel's nose under the tent...... The next thiing we know they will be going after "PLANT'S RIGHTS". Heven forbid you slice a tomato or lettuce or pick or use some herbs or mushrooms.....

If I am hungry and it is a legitimate food item.....I do not see legislation telling me what I can or cannot eat.

Let's see the goverment get serious about how some religions prescribe how the animal MUST BE KILLED before people that believe such can find it acceptable to eat. Tell me the animals killed in such prescribed methods are not tortured or suffer in a most painful death.

Let alone what the goverment does to rapists, murders, or child molesters......
Glad to see the goverment is more concerned about ducks than they are about human lives and voters. :o

The other thing to consider during this mad dash for saving the duck is that you're shutting down companies and people are losing their jobs. The product will simply be imported and life will go on – effectively moving those jobs overseas.

That duck is still going to end up on a plate - regardless if the liver is enlarged or not - there was not a lot of "saving" done here.... The big picture here that annoys me is I have a right to pay for and eat whatever I want - just as people have the right to NOT eat what they don't want. Not a big fan of having my eating habits legislated for me...

I’m not a fan of animal cruelty, some of the senseless things people do amazes me – But I also understand the difference between pets and animals raised for consumption. Producers take care of their investment and take great steps to ensure that animals are taken care of for the simple fact that a scared or abused animal does not return a good product.

Also I will agree with statement that we have bigger issues going on besides saving a duck - let’s save our country first - of course when you see that people are more stirred up about something like this than the homeless children on the streets turning to drugs and prostitution - it explains how we ended up where we are today.

I appreciate things like this are in the works for years - not sure the american public understands that...but that's life.

It may not feed the masses - but the money generated by the production and consumption does via taxes - again it's the bigger picture.

that very well maybe true...

but, the end result is that restaurants, for whatever reason....are going to stop serving this, eventually....

surely, something just as gourmet, arrived by much more humanely, will replace it...

so the tax base won't suffer...

maybe their chef will recommend something to satisfy their palate...like cavier from the Persian Gulf...about the same price ...

Nope, I admit I am not the duck. and you are NOT the cow that provided the prime rib or the hamburger meat, or the plants that provided the soices or the lettuce and tomat,o or the pig that provided the bacon for my hamburger, either are you?

Where do you draw the line about eating without killing something? Seafood or fish? Cow,hog, deer or other animal?
What about plants? You kill them or eat their reproductive organs and "unborn" young.

No matter what, something has to die, for something else to eat it and to live. Even tofu made from bean curds ( or whatever it is made from) and as tasteless as it is, still involves killing something...besides your tastebuds.

Remember the camel's nose under the tent with this legislation. The ducks are bread for this purpose and as someone noted elsewhere about the people it will place out of work. From the person raising the ducks to processing to whatever.

So if/when they get the camels nose under the tent....what are you going to say when they come after your steak or your bacon cheeseburger or your Thanksgiving turkey? Or your ham or your lamb?

I like food that quacks, clucks, moos, oinks, or jumps through the woods.

I'm sorry it that offends anyone. If it does, let me know and I'll make you a Hella-good vegetarian meal when you come visit me in my own house.

We're not talking about eating duck here...DUCK LIVER..from a duck that has been forced fed through a tube, down its' throat..every day..to swell the liver to greatly abnormal size...

to satisfy the appetite of a relative minor percentage of the population...unless you know a lot of people that can or would, pay $20 for 2 oz. of...duck liver.

they are slaughtered at 16 weeks...there's not a lot of duck to be eaten at just 16 weeks...a normal duck that is...they eat only the liver...

I have no issues or concerns with any of the un-vegetarian things you mentioned, not in the least....

however, foie gras is completely different from any of those you mentioned...and I won't eat veal either..nor pay for it if someone orders it, and I'm supposed to pick up the tab...(but that's another topic, altogether)....

And I don't think beef, or pork..or chicken...or even duck, for that matter... or lettuce, or carrots, are in any danger of being attacked...your salad is safe...

it really doesn't matter anyway...this practice is on it's way out!!!!

I understand that, Moonie et al. And I'm not saying this to upset anyone or rile anyone up, but I've never tried foi gras, and I'd at least like to try it.

OK I have thought about this all day and want to add my two cents

I know my views are not shared by many.. or possibly by just me. :)
it is a Duck.. Now I do not want to have the poor little critter
hurt. (fed untill his throat is hurt)
but it is a Duck. My thought is with this we are on a very slippery slope
what is next? Cease growing Salmon? Oysters? Mussells?

And in the history of the U.S. if you outlaw things that people want
you just make some groups richer..

Moonie?? I know (or I think I do :) ) that you don't watch as much TV as I do . Fois Gras is becoming More popular ( as well as veal)
via shows like Iron Chef People are more and more apt to
try and see how the "Other" half lives..

All this talk made me curious -

I did some research - it has a rather interesting history dating back to the Romans - I have had it and yes its very tasty, but of course I also like Veal so....go figure

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foie_gras

The intersting part also is that the animals are essentially free range, then with the last week or so they are force fed, but the process for force feeding them only lasts 2-3 seconds. I also didn't realize that these birds, after the liver is harvested, are used to make another one of my favorite dishes duck confit :D
