That's horrible. I did have a hard time going back to sleep last night / this morning. I kept thinking what if we hadn't caught it in time...

I assume you called the police????
Yeah, I called the non-emergency number and they came out pretty quick. I didn't ask for a police report since the damage was so minor. I just wanted them to check out the area in case any other houses were hit.
But it would be on record.....
Did the fire department come? The have an arson team... maybe they have had other similar reports (?)

OMG Bill I'm so glad you and the family are all safe.
Several years ago I had some friends who lost everything in a fire. They got out but the wife did suffer some bad burns and she was pregnant and they performed a c-section. Everything turned out ok in the long run except for their son - he was young at the time and it took him a while to get past it.
I hope for the best for your family.

Thank God everyone is safe!
Way too scary...
Hopefully the police will do a "wellness check" for awhile.
We had some vandalism at my mother's house awhile back...
the police made the house a part of their regular rounds afterwards.
I filled out a form to request it...

HAPY BIRTHDAY!!!!
That sounds like a nice present to yourself and you recieved the best present in all with being saved from a most horrible experience. I am most glad all are safe and the damage was minimal.
I am saddened to hear about this happening to you, though.
The guy that stopped and woke you, did he have reason to be in the area? I am most glad he was there and just happened to be turning around at the Right Time. Kind of a co inky dinky he was there at that moment. I mean, is it possible he may have set the fire, and then ran and woke you? Did you get a tag number or remember what he looked like or drove? I understand the way way you were wken up and all of the going on, if you didn't get any of that.
If it were kids, be on the look out, for the rest of the neighborhood. Are there any kids in the neighborhood in particular to suspect? Has there been any trouble in your neighborhood before? Maybe they will lay low a few days and then do something else. I hope you got some pictures of the damage or at least the police took a few.
Something else you can do ( if you want) is turn your computer into a security monitoring system. ( well sort of ) ...you can get outdoor webcams and run them around the yard if you wanted. They are relatively inexspensive and can provide some peace of mind.
People set them up to watch bird feeders and whatnot, all the time.
OR
There are various video surveillance cameras that you can get or buy in kits if you wanted to do that and install them yourself. Some quite inexspenive and reasonable. Just something to think about and along with the motion sensing yard lights....
No matter what ...I am glad you are and everyone are safe and thank God it was not any worse than it was.
I do hope they get bastard(s) that did it and SOON!!!
Best of luck and all be with you and yours!

probably caught the hose on fire intentionally to make it harder to put the fire out.
I talked to the arson captain (with the fire department) this morning. At his suggestion I'm opening a police report to start the investigation process.
Ohhhhhhh...that is a scarey thought! Maybe they lit the fence on fire, by the hose, so you could put it out?
Do you have a neighborhood watch in your area?
Although I doubt they will return....but lets HOPE they get caught!

Glad everyones ok.
This is a good idea...had some hooligans in my hood who never came around again after I put a few of these up.
Also glad everyones OK!

A police report is open and they are increasing late night / early morning patrols in the area. I'm definitely installing flood lights with motion sensors.

I don't think so, but I guess you never know - we probably had 20,000 people in the crowds over the weekend at Mayfest. I'm glad for that experience though, because I didn't panic. I just thought about where to get water and luckily it was right there. I was already trying to pull the input hose from the reel when I realized water was flowing through the melted garden hose.

I didn't write down any specific information, but I did give a general description to the officer who came out last night. The guy seemed pretty freaked out by the whole thing to me. I'm just glad somebody woke us up before the fire got any bigger!
