Good idea, Mr. Play!!
Someone's really messed up to do that and they need to get caught. So, so glad that it was reported in time and that you and your family are okay!
Although it is weird that someone was right there .... isn't there such a thing as a "hero syndrome" - you know - where somebody causes a disaster and then they happen to be right there to "save the day?"

Kind of a co inky dinky he was there at that moment. I mean, is it possible he may have set the fire, and then ran and woke you? Did you get a tag number or remember what he looked like or drove? I understand the way way you were wken up and all of the going on, if you didn't get any of that.
I didn't write down any specific information, but I did give a general description to the officer who came out last night. The guy seemed pretty freaked out by the whole thing to me. I'm just glad somebody woke us up before the fire got any bigger!
I am most glad for you and your family and that all no one was harmed and the damage minimal, too. Y'all stay safe my friend and be carefull out there.

I guess that could explain it. It would also support BahamaBreeze's theory of the fire being started next to the hose (making it easier to put out), instead of on it. Looking at this picture, the yellow oval shows a burned gap between the fence boards. The light color is the grass behind the fence. If it started there it would have caught the top handle of the hose reel on fire, which is melted on the ground. That would have dripped onto the hose itself, catching it on fire last. Hmmm....

The more I think about this, the more I wonder if it wasn't the guy who pounded on your door. I mean, even if kids were to light the fence on fire by the hose so you could put it out quickly, what makes them think you would wake up to put it out?
Who is cruising around at 1am on a Sunday night? If it wasn't a neighbor, going to or from work, or the BF sneaking out of the GF bedroom, then there is this "cruiser" playing hero?
Keep us posted and I hope they catch this creep!

Mr. Play wrote:We woke up about 1AM to the sound of loud banging on our door. This guy was turning around in our culdesac and saw a fire on the side of our house. It looks like someone poured lighter fluid on my plastic hose reel and set it on fire. It's close to the wooden fence on that side of the house, and the fire had started spreading up it. Another foot and the wooden eve under the roofline would have caught on fire too. Luckily the hose wasn't completely melted and I was able to put the fire out pretty quickly.
I don't think I have anyone trying to get back at me for anything, so it was probably just some kids out messing around. An officer came out and he's checking out the area in case any other houses were vandalized, so we'll see. I'm only out $50 for the hose and the reel, but somebody almost set my house on fire while we were sleeping.
Hey bud,
I'm just getting to this. Spainjane and I are real sorry. Glad it was just a hose. Some people are real idiots. Happy the family is ok.
WTF?!
Edited to add some pictures;

After studying the area some more this afternoon, I really think the hose caught on fire first. The burned hole in the fence looks like it was probably already there. Some other boards have similar sections that could burn away pretty quickly. This picture shows how much the side of the hose reel was melted, like it had been burning for a while.
The fire department never called me back, so I don't have an expert opinion yet. I'll follow up with them tomorrow on getting an arson investigator to look at it. I could have been fooled but the guy who knocked on the door seemed pretty sincere. He looked to be in his 30's and my wife thinks his wife / girlfriend was over by his car.

That sounds better that he had someone with him....alone, it makes me wonder.
You have to keep on people. Call them in the am. Remember the squeeky wheel...

Just thinking out loud...

maybe someone was smoking and rested their butt down and forgot it?
People looking at the house next door??
