I have been to Rockingham Dragway many times. On day they quit letting people carry beer bottles and cans in the gate. BUT THEY DID supply us with 1/2 gallon milk jugs to pour it in. They did have the customer in mind. That is when you could buy beer for $1.00 at the racetrack.

I've been to several concerts where knuckle heads throw bottles on the stage. The most memorable was in 1987 at an outdoor Violent Femmes concert at Buffalo State University. It was a very hot September Sunday afternoon. I think because it was a Sunday, there were hardly any public safety in the crowd.
People were just kind of filtering in with bottles of beer. At one point a fan threw a bottle at the singer. The throw missed but the singer stopped the show and said "lynch the mother f**ker". A few other drunks jumped on the bottle thrower and beat the crap out of him...
People can be crazy. People in the front rows are within an easy throw of hitting Jimmy or one of the band members in the head with a bottle.
Why take the chance? Plus by the time folks have gotten to the show they've shelled out hundreds of dollars. What is an extra $5.00 for a big glass of water?
all of the sudden I am remebering the scene from the Blues Brothers...jake and elwood playing in the bar with chicken wire on the front of the stage and the beer bottles smashing into it...

Isn't there a scene like that in that awful Patrick Swayze movie Road House? I think it was The Jeff Healey Band playing behind the chicken wire.

if you really think about it rationally, you can only blame the people attedning the event for the reason no bottles are allowed. football fans were responsiable for the plastic bottles at venues now, and i'm sure that has something to do with the fact that when you get a beer at a concert its poured into a plastic cup. they can't expect people to be responsiable enough not to throw stuff.
sorry you had to get rid of your bottle, but i wouldnt blame Jimmy, it's in his and the band best intrest

exactly...so I'm sure its not a Jimmy decision to not let water in...the venue makes those rules.....[/quote]
Thats exactly why I really don't believe it was Buffetts idea. I think that giving the fact it was 90 degrees about 10 miles down the road from the pavillion and about 90 percent humidity, the pavillion had lots of money to make.
We were told to drink our water or throw it away. I told him that the web site said that water was allowed. He told me it was a spur of the moment decision and that Buffett didn't allow bottled water. Someone, and I believe it was VWA had dollar signs in their greedy little eyes.

i went to atlanta 2 years ago with a friend to see Jimmy at the HIFI BUY'S AMP. and on their website it said you could bring sealed bottle water not one not two, just sealed bottle water so we took a case like an 8 pack and he said pour them out or throw them away. and we asked what about just one, he said the same thing so my friend was p*** and gave the guy a word or two and said they needed to fix their web site so we walked all the way back to our car cause we were not about to waste anything came all the way back in bought a large coke and split it for 6 dollars.

I did some financial calcumalations. If a ticket averaged $100.00 for the show, and according to the media, there were nearly 18,000people there, then that works out to about $1.8 million for the night. Wonder how much Verizon made off each ticket.
I remember reading an article years ago in Rolling Stone Mag about Styx and their earnings. If I remember correctly, tickets were about $12.00 then. And if my aging mind doesn't fail me, about 25 percent of the ticket price went to the colliseum. Then if that still hold true, then Verizon made about $450,000.00. Then if everyone in there...no lets say if half of the people in there bought just one of the $5.00 beers, that would be another $45,000.00 in beer. Not to mention the hundreds of $12.00 margaritas walking around there. And the hundreds of cups of $3.50 water.
Financial piracy!

What in the hell is going on today?? Complaining about ticket prices, complaining about water bottles and umbrellas? Tell you what, you get everyone in the stadium to agree that if they get hurt, they wont run to hire a lawyer and file suit, then you can bring in what you want. It's bad enough the man gets nailed with beach balls, now you want to add full water bottles to it?
I think some people need to find a hobby.

Business. Simple as that. Companies are in business to make money.
Whatever they 'made' that night, they still had to pay employee's, the cost of the food/drink items they sold, power to the building, water to the restrooms, insurances coverages, cleaning crew, etc.. they don't exactly pocket it all.

I seem to remember that someone on buffettnews who is in a position to know told us last year that it is a combination of venue and artist that sets the policy on things like water.
Have been to Mountainview where you could bring in one bottle, but they would not allow you to have a cap on it.
Tinley Park pours the water into a paper cup with no lid for the Buffett concerts though I have been to other things there with a more lenient policy.
Last year at Wrigley Field (where you can bring bottles of water to baseball games) they did give you bottles of water, and allowed them on the field on Sunday, but when I tried to take my bottle on the field on Monday, I was told that someone had been throwing bottles at the stage, so they would not allow them on the field.

Boy scouts clean up the racetracks for free. They take the bottles to the recycle center and sell them to raise money. I know. My son did it once in the scouts.

Bristol Motor Speedway pays big money for raceweekend cleanup. One local high school's athletics makes around 5K for the weekend and they are only one of several groups cleaning up, so yes cleanup is also another huge cost.
People can choose to go or not, but as football games, prices are rising and people still keep going. Is there anything cheap these days? We pay for entertainment. When I go, I just expect to pay for more than just the concert or ballgame. But I still like to go.

Agreed, but I don't believe they have to go up that much. $45.00 February 2006 to $129.00 Sunday night. I have been going to the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach for several years to see some pretty big names and have always paid between $35.00 and $45.00 for tickets. And their beer is only $3.00. Never more or less.

rt28009 wrote:We went to the very soggy concert in Charlotte. Not a bad show at all. But several things really ticked me off. First off, the sign said NO CAMERAS. I saw a bunch of them. And not the little ones that could be smuggled in like a pack of smokes. BIG ONES! The second thing was the water. Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre (VWA from here out) said that you are allowed one sealed bottle of water per person. When we arrived at the gate, we were told to drink it or throw it away. The guy at the gate said in a very smart ass voice..."buffets rules, not ours". What is up with that. Why did Buffett not allow us to bring in water. Why should we pay $3.50 for a cup of water in VWA. Prices were extremely overpriced. We went to Buffett last year in the Colliseum and tickets were $45.00 with an $8.50 ticketmaster charge. This year they were $129.00 with a $14.50 ticketmaster charge. Beer WAS $3.00 at the colliseum, at VWA they were $5.00 to $7.50. This is financial piracy!
Don't believe I will ever see a Buffett show again or go to VWA again. Not at these prices.
By the way, my wife has been a hard-core parrothead for years and has seen him 7 times. Five times with her sister, and brother-in-law. (Her ex-husband was a p**** and wouldn't take her.) Twice with me. She has just about every buffett record. Lots of buffett stuff. I am just a parrothead in training. She said that if he was going to treat his fans like that, she was done with his concert and music. She was really ticked off about the whole thing.
Also the local news channed said the show was supposed to run until 11:30, but it ended at 10:30. Any comments about that one.
Reggie
If you don't want to go anymore, excellent. That'll be atleast one more ticket to a sold out show available to the rest of us. Thanks buddy!
