Yesterday Alabama passed a gay marriage ban by a 4 to 1 ratio.
I think "Yes" voters on this BN poll are reluctant to respond so as not to be labelled homophobes.

I think that's probably a good assumption.
Though I wouldn't see being against something like that as automatically meaning you were a homophobe. It could go against some belief or maybe even another reason I can't think of, and not necessarily be because one is afraid of the gay persuasion.
But then, I guess I might be thinking a lot more open ended than the real reasons probably are.
Just my ramblings

or BN'rs are a tad more libertarian in their opinions toward gay marriage.

I dont think homophobe is the proper term. Being opposed to gay marriage doesnt make one 'afraid' of gay people, it just means they dont agree.
I am not opposed to gay civil unions, but this is where the problems occur. Just because someone does not agree with you doesnt make them afriad or wrong. It is an opinion or belief. No one here can decide if it is "right" or "wrong".

I'm not saying they are homophobes. Highly charged discussions like this, in the past here at BN, have turned into nasty, personal, name calling. Who wants to invite that on themselves?

I know you didnt call anyone a homophobe, I was agreeing that the name calling would start, but they should pick different name
It is a shame that discussions turn into nasty name calling and attacks, but some people think they are right and refuse to see any other sides.

No one, in any poll, should ever feel that they have to post the reason why they voted for whatever choice. Not unlike a "regular" election, such as Presidential.

How many people wanted to vote "Mings"?

Numbers are not factual, just there to give an idea of OTHER problems...
We're in debt nearly 9 trillion dollars.
The United States has more people in prison than any other country.
1/3rds of young Americans can't find Iraq on a map.
The dollar is falling, falling, falling.
Iraq is a mess.
Our 15 year olds rank 24 out of 38 in mathematics and 26 of 38 in problem solving.
We're the fattest nation in the world!
Hello, Iran?
The number of uninsured Americans continues to rise.
We haven't found Osama bin Laden..
and yet...
Congress is focusing its power and efforts on a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Seriously?
And you wonder why the vast majority of Americans disapprove of the job you're doing.

Maybe if the majority of Americans who don't think it's important enough to vote would get off their fat asses on election day that would change.

If one third of the people who voted for American Idols would participate in voting for public officials.......need I finish the sentence???

they don't think it's important to vote, but they are sure quick to complain about the person in office

Bingo. I believe it's a small, vocal anti-gay marriage group, a smaller, less vocal pro-gay marriage group, and the majority of the country doesn't care much one way or the other. The end result is that the "anti" group gets up and votes on the amendments on the state level. At the national level, Congress is about as motivated to pass it as the apathetic majority.
