No voice mail at home.... anyone who needs me knows my cell number! I refuse to come home to 5 messages from people selling something.
So... that said... I answer my cell when I hear it ring. And the home phone as well.... I dont wait for a certain number of rings.

Usually 3 rings...takes me that long to get to the phone.
Or...if I don't feel like talkin', let the machine get it & call 'em back.
Don't have Caller ID, cell ph or voice mail.
Signed on to the "DO NOT CALL LIST", so very seldom get telemarketers now. THANK GOD!!

I at least wait until I see the caller ID. If I don't recognize the number, they get voicemail.

I need an option "when you actually hear it" ....
I am hearing impaired and it is really a case of if I can hear my mobile phone ringing or someone alerting me to the fact ... or things start vibrating in my pocket

Ditto.
Generally my answering maching is to receive calls for me when I'm not home. 2-3 rings when I am home though.
