You need to plan to do Austin City Limits Music Fest.

http://www.aclfestival.com/default.aspx

It's not just Texas music, but a good bit of it.

Then make sure to drive on over to Gruene Hall and Luckenbach to see some more of the Hill Country.

So much music...so little time.
good call... ill kick my sister out of her house and we can take over the place

Not being from Texas my knowledge in this area is
somewhat limited
A couple of my favorites at the moment are
Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Joe Ely

They were together with Butch Hancock in the early 70's
in a group named The Flatlanders, you can hear samples
of their music here

Guy Clark. DUBLIN BLUES and KEEPERS-LIVE are both great records.

"I wish I was in Austin
In a chili parlor bar
Drinkin' Mad Dog margaritas
and not carin' where you are"

from "Dublin Blues"

I'd add The Gourds, the Old 97s, Bob Wills, Slobberbone, the Derailers, the Weary Boys, the South Austin Jug Band and Ramsay Midwood to the list. Not to mention Townes Van Zandt and Steve Earle. Well, Earle wasn't born there but as he's wont to say, he "got there as fast as he could".

Excellent music, Hawaiiboy!!

Love the Flatlanders and all those guys individually as well.

Jimmie Dale Gilmore has the most unique voice.
Joe Ely can hit it pretty hard!!! Everybody got Hammered Last Night. :)

If I'm not mistaken he was born in Virgina. Somewhere online I've seen a photo of Steve as a baby with his parents putting his feet into a shoebox filled with Texas soil. So, the first time he ever set his feet on the ground it was on Texas dirt.

I believe he got upset with Texas' stance on the death penalty and refused to even play there for a while but I know he's played at least a couple of times at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in recent years.
