Didn't know Steve wasn't from Texas. He got away from here too.
If I'm not mistaken he was born in Virgina. Somewhere online I've seen a photo of Steve as a baby with his parents putting his feet into a shoebox filled with Texas soil. So, the first time he ever set his feet on the ground it was on Texas dirt.

I believe he got upset with Texas' stance on the death penalty and refused to even play there for a while but I know he's played at least a couple of times at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in recent years.
I read his biography a while back and don't recall any of this but that dosn't mean that I just don't remember it. I do know at the time of his death he was very active in a Dallas NA chapter that still is in existance.

If you're gonna talk great Texas guitarists you must also include Jimmy Vaughan, Bugs Henderson and John Nitzinger.

edit - all info I've found shows Stevie was born in Dallas

Townes Van Zandt. Best songwriter to ever come up from Texas (or from most anywhere).

Been listening to Fred Eaglesmith some lately. I'll be riding across Canada on a train with him in November and I want to know the songs!

Anybody remember Foster and Lloyd? Radney Foster hosts CMT's Crossroads from time to time, I don't know what happened to Bill LLoyd.

This will give all the artist you need to listen to.
Ray Wylie Hubbard, Fred Eaglesmith, Alejandro Escovedo, James McMurtry, Reckless Kelly, Stephen Bruton.........
Fred Eaglesmith is from Canada, which is sort of like Texas but exactly opposite.

And of course there is Stacie Earle, sister to Steve. She and her hubby are pretty good too. And there is Jean Synodinos out of Austin, she's not too shabby either. Give Lubbock's Beth Wood a listen too, she's another up and coming artist.

Nobody has mentioned Daniel Johnston. His influence on modern music has been staggering.

CCR is good but in my opinion have strayed from their earlier roots
