Yes he was alone.

KDKA Pittsburgh is covering this live right now, as it is big news around here. I'll pass along any info I hear.

yeah, at this point football isn't very important. I had a friend who was killed a couple years ago on a motorcycle when a girl turned left into of him and he was wearing a helmet :(

Steeler fans must be in shock and holding their collective breath :-?

I really hope he's not hurt too badly.

I crashed my motorcycle into a stop sign-running car back when I was 16.
Into the windshield and over the other side i went, but my helmet prevented more serious head injury... only a concussion and bruises. You may now tee off...

I'm surprised his contract allowed him to ride a motorcycle. Most of the Tennessee Titans aren't allowed to ride. Any fundraisers involving bikes and fun runs have them riding in trucks, etc. One guy is even a volunteer fire fighter, but he has to stay way back and serve as support only.

I hope Ben is ok.

I'm not promoting helmet laws but ya gotta be a real dumba$$ to ride without one.

I'm not sure of the exact language but there's a clause in the standard NFL contract (probably all professional sports contracs) that says players can't engage in any activity, other than football, that could result in personal injury. If his injuries turn out to be serious and he can't play for an extended period, the Steelers probably could get away with not paying him if they wanted to be hardasses.

I'm a huge Steeler fan but my concern is for the man, not the football player. As far as the helmet thing goes, from the sounds of his most serious injuries it doesn't seem that a helmet would have prevented them. A full face helmet possibly could have broken and made the injuries to his face worse or even caused a neck injury. Like I said earlier, I lost a friend in a similar accident and he was wearing a helmet :-?

I think he's going to be ok. The only thing I would worry about, football-wise are the knee injuries. But from the way they are talking, he should make a full recovery and will probaby play this season!

Just about motorcycles in general. Because of gas prices, I've noticed more motorcylcles on the road, which will undoubtledy lead to more motorcycle accidents. I just think they are so dangerous, but I see their appeal. I just wish Ben would be more careful..he has a career to think about!

As a Bronco fan, all I've got to say is, Godspeed in your recovery Ben.

Best Wishes to Ben for a speedy recovery.

In NH there isnt a "helmet law".....I just dont understand it at all....and living right on the border of Ma, it's amazing to see them stop as soon as the cross over the border on the hwy and stop and take off thier helmets.....

Being "Bike Week" this week in Laconia, we've already heard of so many people that have been killed....sad thing, most of them have been because of other drivers

No offense, but that logic is quite faulty. Nearly everyone who throws their leg over a motorcycle has a career/job to think about - and most have a hell of alot more to lose by being seriously injured. Let's face it, if Ben's career ended yesterday, he's not exactly going to become destitute...that's not the case with most riders out there.

I feel bad for anybody that goes down hard on a bike - it's a reality I deal with on a daily basis - but Ben doesn't peg my sympathy meter as much as the normal Joes I read about in the paper.

ok.

So what if he's a high-profile motocycle accident and the normal joes aren't as much? If anything, I think this is a good thing - it brings attention to motorcycle safety and the issue of helmet laws.

Big Ben does have my sympathy. The 24 yr old lost all of his teeth! That's not detrimental to his career.

It's called the "Dangerous Conduct" clause. At this point it will be up to the Steelers whether to pay him or not.

I live in NH but can't imagine riding without a helmet. I believe a full-face helmet would have reduced/eliminated his head injuries. He was riding a Suzuki Hayabusa, considered the fastest stock motorcycle you can buy. I doubt he's taken advanced riding courses to match his ability to the bike. Of course, that doesn't help when an old lady in a Buick takes a left right in front of you.

BTW, in NH we have no seatbelt law for adults, yet we have a higher seatbelt use rate than most states where it is required.

smacky wrote:Why are helmets with motorcycles optional, but not seatbelts in cars? Just curious.

(edited because I can't spell)
A seatbelt keeps you behind the wheel of the car in an accident or evasive manuever and therefore is a safety feature for OTHERS as well as you.....a helmet....not so much.
He could have been wearing a helmet and traded his facial injuries for a spinal cord injury.....

As a former (and hopefully future) rider I can say I completely understand both sides of the helmet law issue. And I've ridden many a time without a helmet. Most riders that do have the choice to wear a helmet or not understand the consequences of head impacting pavement or any other object. Personally I don't like bugs hitting my face - I know a guy that lost an eye to a bug so I usually wear a helmet with a face shield. I also KNOW that a lot of motorcycle/auto accidents are because the driver of the car wasn't paying attention and didn't see the motorcycle. It's happened to me and friends way too many times.

I hope Ben is ok. I'd hate to see this end his career.
