Well, helmets aren't optional in all states. In the states where they are optional, it's because motorcyclists are a much better lobbying group than those opposed to seat belts. Here in PA, we had our helmet law modified about 2 years ago...after a 25 year fight to do so.
I'm not sure if seatbelts are mandatory in all states either. They MAY be, but I don't know.
ANOTHER reason why helmets may be optional for motorcycle riders is the fact that probably 99% of people who ride motorcycles are FAR better drivers than people who drive cars.
YES WE ARE!! When ur riding, you are HYPER aware of whats going on around you; at least I am. There's no day dreaming, talking on a cell phone, etc etc. You always have to watch everything thats going on around and in front of you including the road surface itself! I for one do not wear a helmet although i know i should. (but i have a really good will!) Maine dosen't have a helmet law. I also noticed in todays paper that the other driver was from Maine, albeit not riding a bike. Accidents happen. Wishing Ben the best!

And while I know there are many responsible riders out there, I've seen just as many a-hole bikers. Idjits are idjits, no matter what they're driving.
In my line of work I've seen the results of not wearing a helmet, and it usually isn't pretty. Head trauma is brutal.

You're right, accidents happen. My job is to respond to those "accidents", the riders we pick up that wore helmets have a chance, those who didn't wear a helmet are covered up are usually transported to the morgue by ground.

sadly, you are correct and thank you for what you do. that is a job that I could never do... It gives me pause. Its dangerous everytime i get on my Harley. hell, i had a close call today with someone who ran a red light and never saw me turning. Helmets save lives; no doubt. awarness is key.

You could be the best rider out there but there's still stupid people behind the wheel that want to kill you.

Here is a sad story from a family who never really thought one bit about motorcycles, good or bad......
This past Sunday, June 11th at about 9:10 AM, my wife and kids were driving to Tampa to pick me up at the airport. They were in the right lane doing 65 MPH and belted in our Suburban on I275 N in St Pete.
A 21 year old male was driving(??) a highly modified, uninsured Yamaha at FHP estimates of 120 MPH.
Since another vehicle was in the center lane, this guy attempted to squeeze between my wife and the other vehicle......It did not work out. He slammed into the back of the Suburban, went airborn and was found about 400 feet away. No helmet and dead.
Luckily my family is physically uninjured. Mentally though, is a very different situation. Right now, I'm not sure when or even if they will ever be able to get over that image of someone dead....
In a way, I'm glad he did hit our Suburban. According to FHP, had he slammed into say a minivan with younger kids in car seats, the death toll would have been higher than 1...
Right now, we don't have a very high opinion of anyone riding a motor cycle.........

Sounds like he needed to be removed from the gene pool.
Sorry for your family's distress, I wish them the best.

RIPH!!! ...LTNS....
how sad and quickly an afternoon drive can turn tragic and so life altering..
the flip side to that is...they survive, and end up in a care facility, in various stages of inability to care for themselves..

Brother G,
LTNS!!!! Saddened to hear about the accident but I am most glad your family is physically safe. You and your family have our prayers and good thoughts for the healing of what you are going through.
I have seen a lot of people on those crotch rockets, zipping in and out around cars at high speed. It is miracle, and I have been lucky not to have seen or heard of any of them killed. I am saddened your family had to witness this and go through this.
Obviously the person on the bike is a Darwin Award winning canidate. No doubt he has family and friends out there that loved him and will miss him. My condolences to the Bike rider's family and friends as well.
I have tried to call you a few times, left messages,....PM me if you would.
