If we liked it then, why wouldn't we like most of it now? I grew up in the 70's and 80's so I can sing disco, classic rock and new wave at the drop of a hat. But I was raised on Big Band, swing, show tunes and music of the 40's and early 50's and I still love it. Heck, The Lawrence Welk Show was required viewing in my household. I was also raised on traditional Irish music so that has always been a staple of my listening choices.

I have very eclectic musical tastes, so there is not much that I won't listen to other than rap and most of the "hip hop" stuff out there....or the screeching of Mariah Carey. Her voice is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me. :-?

Oh, and Cate? The Phantom of the Opera is one of my all time favorite musicals and the soundtrack is in my top ten. I was fortunate enough to see Michael Crawford perform as the Phantom so the disc brings back a lot of memories for me. :D
Phantom with Crawford, too! 1991, Toronto, Pantages Theatre. GREAT seats!

Traditional Irish music, too - The Fureys, The Wolfe Tones, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancey . . .

My grandfather loved the songs of WWII, especially as perfromed by Vera Lynn, a British singer, and especially, "The White Cliffs of Dover". He also loved to sing in his rich baritone voice some of the old "cowboy" songs, such as "Let The Rest Of The World Go By", looking lovingly into my grandmother's eyes.

My late Mom and Dad were awesome together on a dance floor and when my brothers and I were small, before going out for the evening, they would take a turn or two around our living room, all dressed in their finery, to a tune on the hi-fi from Count Basie or Frank Sinatra. In my 7 year-old eyes, they might have been Ginger and Fred!!
Hmmm, Cate, maybe we were separated at birth?! :)

The White Cliffs of Dover is one of my faves....and Green Eyes, Flying Home etc. My Grandfather had a small band/orchestra and I'm sure that is where I get my love of music. Danny Boy was his favorite song and he performed it often, so it is very special to me. I just wish I had been able to see him perform. He passed away when I was 5 and had stopped performing long before then. :(

I had great seats for Phantom too! They were a birthday present from my Mom. Methinks you and I are going to have to go see a "show' sometime together...it would be great fun. I would love to see Harry Connick, Jr in the Pajama Game, and I want to see Jersey Boys too.

OH, how great would THAT be??! I'd love to see either, or BOTH! (we would not be allowed to sing along with all of those 4 Seasons' songs -- the rest of the audience would not approve.
