I like BEG. Not just because its a good song that Jimmy and the CRB have made their own, but because the band appears to enjoy playing it. it allows a couple Coral Reefers that don't normally get a chance to show off a little and it is a good energy song for the crowd.
Final encore...?
Maybe not, but I really liked it ending the first set going into intermission.
I agree. I like BEG (both the BNer and the song

). It's got loads of energy, and I love Ralph's solo.
But I really, REALLY don't like it as a final encore.... I very much prefer a slow(er) final encore, and it *really* bugs me to have a cover closing the show.
A few of my favorite final encores:
City of New Orleans, Wrigley, Sep 2005. This one wins, hands down.
Lovely Cruise, Maui Jan 2004
Stories We Could Tell, Honolulu, Jan 2004
Tonight I Just Need My Guitar, Tampa, Feb 2003
He Went to Paris, Great Woods, Jun 2005
Defying Gravity, Fenway, Sep 2004
I can not argue with this list, even know city of new orleans is a Goodman song, it was something jimmy had to do. I also thought the Louie Armstrong cover he did right after Katrina was fitting and a perfect ending. I would love to see him switch up his encores a little more, maybe throw some 12 volt man in there once in a while.

I contradicted myself pretty badly, didn't I?
Complain about covers, then name a cover as my favorite encore..... Oh, well, there's an exception to every rule, and this is mine.... City of New Orleans at Wrigley was just amazing.....

This is one I don't think anyone would complain about. Especially with the timing and setting for the situation. There are times when the covers can be fitting. I thought it was a cool tribute playing a DMB song in Virginia last year as well as Springsteen song in the closest venue he played to NJ. I just get frustrated when these songs become staples on a particular leg of the tour and 25% of the show is already covers.

Jimmy also closed out the Pittsburgh show with BEG...although I still enjoy hearing the song, I prefer a slow song as well to close out the evening....I still think at Pittsburgh and Alpine Jimmy had one more song planned, but the "time thing" didn't work out...
Just a thought

normally, I would agree, except that several people noted the time at each show, and it was well before 11:00....

I love "Brown Eyed Girl," but not as a final encore.
Again, I think Jimmy fully intended on coming back out for one final ballad, but he no sooner walked off the stage and the stage crew IMMEDIATELY started taking everything down-when the audience saw this, they assumed that was it and left.
The fact that he left his guitar on the stage led me to believe this, but, of course, it's just speculation on my part.
Oh well, let's see what happens at the next concert.

I, too think I'd like a slow, Buffett song as the final encore. I especially like Oysters & Pearls. Not only was it the final encore at my first Buffett concert in Orlando in 2001...but it is so true!! (By the way, I am definitely an oyster, not a pearl!!

, but our Jimmy is 100% pearl!!)
But I do like BEG (both our BN'er and the Song)!! At my first concert I was lucky enough to get seats in the 5th row (I'll tell ya the story sometime!). There was a girl with a big sign that said "GREEN EYED GIRL". In one of the choruses Jimmy substituted that phrase for brown eyed girl & I thought that was so cool (I was VERY star struck!! Hadnt been to ANY concert in years & years and since this was my very FIRST BUFFETT concert I was on cloud 9!

Put the song to bed please Jimmy. It was a fun cover 20 years ago but it didn't have to become one of the songs you play every year.
I was definitely hoping for Nautical Wheelers or some other cool solo acoustic finale. The was a bummer of an ending to Alpine for me.
Still I had a little fun.

I too love BEG the song and our BN girl....but not as a final encore....
I also prefer the slower pace songs, and he has so many good ones...
maybe it was just a glitch like some of you have mentioned

But not only did the crew come out to start clearing, but the lights came on too.....
I was glad to hear Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street, otherwise the setlist wasn't the most creative, but I must say that in addition to Jimmy's own music - I like the covers. Southern Cross is one of my favorites, I like BEG (ok, could have been earlier in the set), City of New Orleans was fantastic (Chicago 01), as is Everybody's Talkin' and I also like the live recording I have of Please Come to Boston....
Overall, I had a blast at the show, and I wouldn't really change any minute of it!!

I wish he'd stop playing it altogether, I'm tired of hearing it.

It's not my fave, but who am I to say?
(At least it's not a cover of "Trippin' Billies" by Dave Matthews. I'm sorry but that was just icky last year.)

As much as you pholks may not want to admit it, there is no right or wrong answer, whether you're a SYKBH fan or a fan that knows JB's entire catalog. It's just a personal taste.
Myself, I am a phan of the closer being an up-tempo fast paced bring the house down kind of tune that leaves me with my fist pumping or me boogieing in the aisle, not a quiet, reflective accoustic number that I'm silently swaying along with.
Also, whether it's a JB tune isn't crucial either. Some of the finer moments I've seen at concerts was Springsteen closing in Detroit with the Detroit Medley....."Devil With the Blue Dress", "Good Golly Miss Molly", "Jennie Take A Ride" and Tom Petty doing "Shout".
What I will admit is that I like to be surprised with the final tune and that is where JB may be better served to pull something different each night from his catalog rather than BEG or something comparable.

I'd rather hear BEG than Southern Cross or Werewolves of London. We had the latter and not the former last week in Cincy.

Again.. It was really good to see JB back at Alpine Valley. It was a great set list overall, but with the amount of songs Jimmy has to pick from, I don't understand the cover sh$t..... BEG, and Southern Cross should have been retired years ago... Werewolves of London should never have been done in the first place... If he plays anymore covers he might as well play the lounge room at the local Ramada Inn...
On the flip side, I guess Jimmy still playing, and playing anything is better than his retiring.....

BEG was "our song" for me and the HOTTEST girlfriend I've ever had. She was also my only Buffett-loving girlfriend and the one I went to my first concert with.
So, believe it or not, I want to hear BEG at every show, and love it being the closer, if Jimmy so chooses.
Not that you care, but: the ex-wife was kinda into Jimmy, but only attended one concert with me, because we were going to be in Vegas anyway, plus I bought the tickets.
