Only visited once. DC is an amzingly powerful town. Any person with an ounce of respect for our county and our government will be in awe the entire time.
If you are looking for suggestions, I can recommend only a few due to my short stay:
Aviation museum
Museum of American History
Museum of radio and TV was interesting, but if I went back I'd spend time elsewhere
Lincoln Memorial
Korean Was Memorial (ghostly and sobering)

These were my biggies. Hope it helps.

'Fraid Richmond isn't quite in the neighborhood.

FYI, there is now a Cheeseburger in Paradise restaurant in Woodbridge, about an hour South of D.C. Also is near to (I think) near Potomac Mills Outlet Mall, which is is Heaven if you're into shopping.

I work about 10 minutes from DC in Maryland.

My favorite museum is the International Spy Museum, its not free like the Smithsonian ones, but it is very worth it. You can spend all day there if you wanted to easily. Tons of information.

I absolutely hated the American History Museum. I felt it should be retitled the American Political Correctness Museum. Thats what it was, political correctness throughout US history. From the American women section, to the Jews in New Mexico exhibit.

Your much better off going to the individual museums about minorites like the Holocaust museum or the Native American museum.

Unless you are in to textiles, because they take up a large section.

I live just west of DC in VA.

What to see?
Obviously the monuments. Walk the mall. Vietnam and Korea are moving. Lincoln is just impressive. Jefferson is elegant. Go to the top of the Washington monument. Tickets are cheap I think $2.00 and you can get them from ticketmaster. Call your congressman and/or senator and see if you they can get you into a tour of the capital.

Drive down and walk through the monumnets at night. They are all lit and it is really quite beautiful.

Go to Arlington National cemetary. The tomb of the unknowns, the memorial to the Challenger, the eternal flame and there are dozens of other places to visit, not to mention Arlington House which was Robert E. Lee's home before the war.

The mueseums are a must see, Natural History has the Hope Diamond as well as the other displays you would expect. Air and Space, and the Air and Space Annex out at Dulles Airport, Museum of US History has the Star Spangled Banner. Contrary to a prior post, I feel it is a great museum.

US Archives. Obviously the Declaration, Constitution and Bill of Rights, but also other documents are on display. Lee's surrender at Appomatox.

Take in the architecture in general. The city was designed to impress and intimidate. Broad avenues lined with massive buildings.

If you have time go South to Old Town Alexandria, and then further south to Mt Vernon. Not too far away, no more then 10 miles, but plan around traffic because that is the bear.

Any questions, PM me or ask away and I will let you know what I can.
