dental phobia
does anybody else suffer from it, I mean really badly. I've been putting off this dentist thing so long I have it down to an art form. I have to get a broken tooth pulled. (ice chewing is evil) I have in my hand several ***** to get me thru the appointments needed for this. But I need to actually call in the am make an appt and then actually get there. This is three steps too many.
If you live in NJ and have a good dentist please pass on the name. He must use nitrous.

I know others who do, but I'm not one of them. Not at all. My dentist is FANTASTIC - and I've sent probably 20 people to him - MANY of which were just like you.
I've never had a bad experience, and I'm lucky to have very good teeth. At 46, I have 4 fillings, and the only thing major I've had done was having my wisdom teeth out 25 years ago.

Then by all means, make sure the dentist knows this, and will accommodate you. It is better for them to have you knocked out, then sitting there looking scared to death!OceanCityGirl wrote:that would be me. I don't care what is done if nitrous is involvedI have several friends whose phobias are so severe, they get knocked out, even for something as basic as a cleaning.

I know there are dentists that specialize in "phobic patients"
Call 1-800-DENTIST and have them help you find one in your area.....
I don't really like the dentist, but every time I go it's never as bad as I think it will be.....

I'll be honest.... I am a dentist.
I don't like to mention it much...it's not one of those careers that wins friends and influences people!!
I'm a bit far for you to drive... especially shaking the whole way...
but, yes, nitrous is wonderful for people who are scared!!
And be careful with the 1-800 thing...it's kind of a scam. A dentist has to pay mucho $$ to be listed with them....so you usually find the dentists that NEED patients...not neccessarily the same ones that people will recommend
I think the best way to pick is to ask around to see who people in your area like....
Then just close your eyes and say "Ahhhhhh...."
and it'll be over before you know it!!

Re: dental phobia
I have a dental phobia that turns me into a screaming 2 year old if I even go near a dentist. Any time I go, I can only go to a dentist who will knock me out, even for a cleaning.
I don't know why, it just scares the **** out of me.

Two words: "nitrous oxide." Not all dentists use it, but you need to see one who does. It will turn a bad experience into a fun, philosophical experience (assuming that you get philosophical when you are high).
And the best part -- no lingering side effects, and all that you have to do is to take a few deep breathes and you come back down about that quickly.

it's my dental fear that has me in this poition. Now I have to have a tooth pulled. I've waited far too long and it's infected. I want to go in, get caught up on any work and never procrastinate again. Spain, I don't hate dentists, i'm not an anti-dentite. I just hate me being there. I've never had a bad experience so I don't know where this fear comes from. I've called a few places and they all seem to want to talk me out of using nitrous.

I agree with spainjane...ask your friends and co-workers. Unless they are only pretending to like you
, they won't steer you wrong. I was actually at the dentist yesterday, and have to head back next week for some work. I too put the visit off longer than I should, but trust me, you will feel better once you get in and start to get things taken care of

My husband did that about three months ago. Went in after not having gone to the dentist for many, many years (over 10). Had to get a bunch of fillings and cleaning done, did it in four sessions, and he says he feels better than he has in years. He asked the dentist about dealing with his 'trouble' wife, and they said they have no issues with putting me under as long as he was there while they do the work.OceanCityGirl wrote:it's my dental fear that has me in this poition. Now I just need to get up the courage to do the same

I HATE GOING TO THE DENTIST!!! I had a bad exprience with an orthodontist.
I'm one of those that will go if I'm in pain. I KNOW I need to go more often but I really have had a hard time over the years finding one that I'm comfortable with and that understands my need to feel very little pain(not only during the treatment but AFTER as well) as well as one that dosn't charge a small fortune for services.
Don's real comfortable with his dentist - I'll give him a try.........someday.

I guess I'm in the minority. I don't mind and actually kinda like the going to the dentist. Lay back, relax for a half hour and not worry about anything. I even go four times a year. I know, crazy huh?
After having major ortodontic work done throughout my entire teens, there is nothing the dentist can do to me that can even come close to the pain and trauma I had with the orthodontist.

It seems to me that you need to get this done sooner rather than later. I wholeheartedly agree that the way to go is asking friends and others you trust for recommendations. But all this apprehension is probably making things a bit worse, and I would guess that you will feel a whole lot better when this is done! And if I was there, I would happily go with you to help you through this-maybe you have a friend that can do that.OceanCityGirl wrote:it's my dental fear that has me in this poition. Anyone with a dental background feel free to jump in here and disagree with me, but I think that the big reason why more dentists don't have nitrous is because they are worried about the constant exposure to them and their staff. Many of the dentists that still use the stuff have complicated (and no doubt expensive) rebreathing apparatus and so forth to recover the fumes.
You, as a patient, have little exposure and the stuff won't hurt you.
So IMHO the reason they are trying to talk you out of nitrous has less to do with your safety and comfort and more to do with their inability to supply the stuff.
