Saw him out on Long Island for the "Back at the Ranch" show he did for Paul Simon in 1994. The next day I went to my local Coconuts and saw Fruitcakes on display. I picked that up along with a copy of Feeding Frenzy. I bought Feeding Frenzy because there was a song played during the show I went to that I loved which I had never heard before. I listened to both CD's later that day as I drove up I-95 to New London, CT. Just after New Haven, "Jolly Mon" came on. That was the actual moment when I knew that I was going to love JB's music. Not just one or two songs, but all of it.

My first album was Feeding Frenzy on tape. I had recently quit my job and traveled down the coast with my girlfriend (now wife) with no agenda in mind. We went to Ft Lauderdale to visit my cousin and she told us we had made it this far so now go to Key West. She also lent us her Beaches, Boats, Bars, and Ballads box set to listen to . I didn't know a whole lot about JB except for Margaritaville. After going to KW and listening to Buffett I was hooked. So when I got back home, I went to the store and bought the Feeding Frenzy on tape. And the rest is history.

My first album was SYKBH (of course). At the time, I was really intrigued by the song Cheeseburger in Paradise and this was before I knew any other Buffett song other than Margaritaville. At the time, I always used to buy an artists "Greatest Hits" collection and decide whether or not I liked the artist or not.
I confess, at first I had a little trouble listening to the songs, primarily because at the time songs like Pencil Thin Mustache and Boat Drinks sounded somewhat annoying.
Eventually the songs "grew" on me so the next thing I picked up was BBBB. After listening to a few songs on that I got hooked.
I have since learned a few things about Buffett's music: For one, the songs on SYKBH are probably some of the more known, but tedious songs that he has ever produced, and for two, if I would have started with one of his albums like Banana Wind or A1A I would have been hooked sooner
Good post!

To follow up my original post, since picking up "Far Side of the World" in '02 I have really gotten into JB, especially the older music. About 18 months ago, I found a lot set of 16 Buffett CD's on EBay for @ $100.00. My wife bought it for my birthday that year. Here's my collection now:
Hot Water
SYKBY
MMiM
You Had to be There
Live at Fenway Park
Live in Hawaii
Live in Las Vegas
Live in Auburn
Volcano
Beach House on the Moon
CILCIA
AIA
Riddles in the Sand
Coconut Telegraph
One Particular Harbor
Off to See the Lizard
Far Side of the World
License to Chill
Banana Wind
Barometer Soup
Feeding Frenzy
Floridays
Last Mango in Paris
Havana Daydreamin’
Living & Dying in ¾ Time
A White Sportscoat & a Pink Crustacean (unofficial copy)
Also last year my wife and I went on a cruise that stopped in Key West. We took the "Trails of Margaritaville" walking tour and had lunch at Margaritaville. It was awesome! The regular tour guide wasn't there so the sub was a guy that had toured with Jimmy for several years (I saw him on one of the DVD's recently) and he had some great stories about Jimmy.

in 1990 i was on a med cruise in the navy. with a more time to kill on our hands than you can imagine, we played alot of cards, mainly gin. anyway, somebody had feedy frenzy playing right there and if you've ever been held captive on a ship, you know you will play any and all music to death. one particular harbour was the very first song that grabbed me, i mean it really resonated through me, almost like i had been to where he was singing about before, deja vu. since then there has been a buffett song for each of the milestones in my life. kinda like signposts; i can see my son and his friends singing cheeseburger in the back seat of the car, dancing in the dark to love in the library.... how bland it would be without these songs in our lives.
if you can read this, thank a teacher. if you can read this in english, thank a soldier.

first album
Like many, the first one was SYKBH. I actually got it through one of those record clubs. You know, "7 CDs for 1 cent" or some such. I truthfully didn't know who Jimmy Buffett was, but figured if the album is called "Songs You Know By Heart," maybe I'd have heard one of them. (Turns out I hadn't!)
Got the CD, played it once, put it away for several years.
THEN, the family trip to Florida. I remembered I had the CD and threw it in the car. On vacation, my (at the time) infant son came down with a fever. While the wife took the daughter out to play on the beach, I stayed at the condo, rocking the baby, watching the waves and playing that CD.
For some reason, that's when it all clicked. Been here ever since.

OK...fellow band geek here!LonePalm1 wrote:Great post/question.
I grew up listening to buffett. My mom and dad had plently of albums on vinyl. But I remember when I really started liking Buffett on my own. I was 16 years old on a band trip (yes.... band trip) To Mytrle Beach, SC. This was my first trip outside of the midwest, and the first time I ever saw the ocean. So I took my mom and dads CD - One Particular Harbour. I remember sitting on the balcony of our hotel, listening to the CD and hearing the waves crash. Truly magical moment for me. I haven't been to the ocean execpt those few days in High school. But as jimmy says, the Mississippi runs right into the gulf which takes you to the sea. So growing up in a river town in Iowa, I guess I always had a connection to the sea.
Marching band competition, I presume?
What did you play?
(Tenor Sax here)
OK...to answer...it was SYKBH. I was a rather late bloomer...I never heard anything (maybe margaritaville) until college. I remember walking to class at Purdue and going past the Alpha Kappa Lambda house and ALWAYS hearing "Come Monday" blaring from the 2nd story window. That song would stay in my head all day long and after a little research at Coconuts, it was mine, all mine!!!
Then I started shows that summer and bought up everything I could...
Most of my phrends liked Jimmy, but were more into the party (sure I was too) but being a true music lover and a sucker for a steel drum, I got sucked in much harder than any of my other friends.

A-1-A ...... on 8-track tape ... probably sometime around '75 or '76. Many, many years later I was able to get Jimmy's autograph on that original 8-track (http://www.surfpirates.com/piratejournals/8track.htm). Back in the 70's it was 50/50 when I went into the record store as to whether or not I'd be picking up a vinyl album for the home or an 8-track tape for the car. The I bought an 8-track player/recorder which still works and I still own and is set up in my basement along with the modern stereo equipment. Yes boys and girls, if I could find a blank 8-track tape I could actually record on it.
Trust me you MP3 generation youngsters ... you don't the know what it was like shoving matchbooks into your 8-track player so you didn't hear 2 tracks playing at once through your car speakers. The tracks used to "bleed" into one another after repeated plays.
Anyone else remember the thrills and spills of 8-track?

Matchbooks were more valuable if they had 3 or more rows of matches because they did a better job of holding the tape in the right position. I still have a couple of 8 track tapes in the basement, just in case I can ever get the player working again. I never did get around to buying a recorder for eight tracks.

x2--bought it after going to a fraternity "Buffett party" cuz it had Margaritaville on it. Still is my favorite album after all these years. Oh, it was on cassette when I got it. Gotta love the '80's.
First album that I went out to get was "Floridays." First concert was in '87 and was hooked at that point. I still have my t-shirt from that concert--the one with the parrot holding the Corona bottle. Gawd, I loved that shirt---guess it's a "permanent reminder" as they say

My first was "Changes". My first new one was "Volcano".
I do remember taping "Coconut Telegraph" off of the (at the time) local Washington D.C. rock and Roll station. I thought it was odd because the station never played Buffett, but then they premiered an entire album.
I listened to it and my first impression was "The party is over". I thought that Buffett was done with the songs about raising hell. How wrong I was. I always look at that album as my "make or break" Buffett album. I now love that album and realize how wrong my then 17 year old brain was about (most) things, especially that record
