It's not about getting ahead, it's about trying to make the world a better place. I mean, do his heirs really need $8 billion apiece, or could they make do with $1 billion? At some point in our lives, most of us will look back and ask what good we did with it. To me, it's refreshing to see someone with so much wealth use it to make a difference in the world. Who knows - this might actually be enough money to find a cure for AIDS or some form of cancer. As for giving it to the Gates foundation, there is obviously a huge trust factor. To quote the Fortune article - "The gifts to the Gates foundation will be made either by Buffett or through his estate as long as at least one of the pair -- Bill, now 50, or Melinda, 41 -- is active in it."

And if you're still distraught, I'm sure there's a significant tax benefit as well - maybe that's it.

Stephen Colbert: "Warren Buffett is so rich, he has hired Bill Gates to spend his money."

Now if I can just figure out a way to convince him to "donate" about 100 grand my way....that's all I'd need.

It is great and is trully admirabke for him to donate to charity. I doubt anyone would ever question that. I don't really question how or who he gives it to.

I only pointed out that I saw problems on both sides of the WAY he is donating. Being forced to spend $1.5 BILLION a year??? Nothing left over.... Does not anyone see room for problems and waste with that???
Do the math and figure out how much money that must be spent each day of the year, on an average.

I also question, with so many needy charities out there, go ahead and pick one or more.
Sure it is his money to do with as he pleases. God I hope and pray it helps some people.

He could have helped alot of homeless people out, he could have created businesses and put unemployed people to work, or built shelters, or fed a lot of hungry people right here in America, or paid for rehabilitation of wounded vets, or many numerous other things, such as feeding the starving children of the world, that we hear so much about that can be educated and fed and clothed for so little ammount per day or to helping peoplerebuild or relocate from natural disasters.

That is all that I was pointing out.

Care to say Bill Gates favorite charities need more than any other charity?
Is Bill Gates a good guy to operate them? I can't say. I do know that Bill Gates can well afford his own charities.

Thank them both for giving to charities.....Tell me how many of us combined with all of salaries combined would ever be able to give $1.5 BILLION US dollars to any particular charity? How far would thqt money go to giving our troops a REAL "Buffett Fest" ?
A cure for cancer? A cure for AIDS? How many people are employed and have a job seeking such? How many people would suddenly be unemployed, if such cures were founded and released? I doubt if there will ever be any real cure for either to be found and released. I hope there will be, but I seriously doubt it.

Someone who gets it. How can one give 1.5 billion that must be spent...not allocated within a year...or lose it. Bill canot do this. Warren cannot do this. That is my point. Or he has to pick one maybe two charities and run with it....That does not help Katrina Victims, homeless in the USA, MS, Life With Cancer (my charity), etc....

He is THE GOD and making and retaining money...do not give it to Bill and Mlinda...Hire someone to do it methodically under his watchful eye. It might work! Might!

I don't see where anyone has the 'right' to question what the man does with his money. He earned every cent, and whatever he wants to do with it? So be it. I just think it's awesome he's giving ANYTHING to charity.

Are you saying I have no Right to question where the money goes? What if someone donates a measliy paltry sum of $5.00? Are they not owed an accounting of how the charity's money is spent?

I have said it before...I don't care what he does with OR HOW HE SPENDS HIS MONEY.
I only expressed my feelings and opinion on what I thought about the way he did so.

Every LEGITMATE charity that is tax deductible, owes an accounting for all of the moneys collected. Do you have any idea of how much $1.5 BILLION comes out to being spent every day? Care to tell us that money could not be better spent helping our wounded vets and homeless people or creating jobs for the unemployed?

Yep. It's not your money.

Sam wrote: Every LEGITMATE charity that is tax deductible, owes an accounting for all of the moneys collected.
And all major charities I know do that. I'm sure this one will too.

Nope. I don't care to tell anyone how to spend their money.

I NEVER SAID IT WAS MY MONEY!!! I challenge you to prove I said otherwise. I have repeatedly said it was HIS MONE. It was in the news about his "donation". Obviously YOU have made your comments as have others.

I do HAVE THE RIGHT TO COMMENT AS I SEE FIT, AS YOU DO!!!

I would choose to help out at home FIRST!

You have your opinion and I have mine.

I will leave it at that........

I believe the same as Sam. But I choose my words differently. I follow Warren closely for investments/ curiousity...and he can do what he wants with his $$$$.

but.... HE USES MONEY TO MAKE MONEY!!!!! he is deviating from his investment strategy that has made him a genius.

Now he wants us to believe that Bill and Melinda will spend his money wiser?

If I were an owner of Berkshire Ha. or something else he owns ( which I do), I can say what I want. He sets the pace. And helping poor, starving, disease riden Africans is great, but that does nothing for home grown problems. He is leading a herd of buffalo off a cliff for no reason. He knows it! I will get over it soon, just not real soon. :(
