Have fun Wayne!!!! I know how much you love hunting with Dad. I miss the time with Mom.
But here are some things I don't miss:
packing the trailer,
doing the before and after hunting season laundry,
worrying about whether the truck will make the trip,
cleaning the trailer,
and my all time favorite- going to get you, Dad and several antelope in the middle of the night!!!
Good Luck!!!!

no.. With the fact that my Dad will Retire from hunting one day.
I may change what I hunt.. which will decide what I need..
IE. Pronghorn.. a smaller size gun.
and I
may Relocate.. I am looking in the 6MM or .243
area but if I move to a State that requires Shotgun only
or above a required size.....

I think you would be happy with either of those calibers. Like anything else bullet placement is the most important thing.
Not sure what you might be changing what you hunt to, but as far as deer size game...either caliber will serve quite well.

yep on the placement.. I'm not sure but I think Wyoming
is a No No on the 6MM (or was)
and if I move to a Shotgun/black powder state....
or to a place that 30 yard shots are the norm.. I have an ole
Enfield that has no scope. and a very nice pistol for that.
so I will hold off.. for now..

I wonder what was wrong with the 6mmRem? I know sometimes ammo can possibly be difficult to find. Ballistically the the .243 and 6mmRem are pretty close.
Blackpowder is always fun. I have a .50 cal CVA St.Louis Hawkens. CVA made affordable rifles, shotguns, and handguns at one time. They even offered a .50 Cal with an exchangable 12 gauge barrel combo at one time. I personally prefer percusstion over flintlocks. (I don't really care for the inline percussion due to personal taste. There is nothing wrong with them though.) I was reading something about some areas don't allow the inline percussion so have to check about that as well.
When it comes to shotguns also check and see it you are allowed to use slugs or are limited to buckshot. I know some areas do regulate or limit it. In this area they do have limits depending on how many are hunting in a certain size area.

All of this is why I am holding off.. Wyoming has some .. Ideas.. about what will and will not do the job..
I think
some of stops people that read this rifle will
do this or that.. and shoot the gun twice.. Drive to Wyoming.. then wound an animal
or two and leave them out there..

I would HOPE it would. No matter the weapon or caliber, it is only as good oras bad as the person carrying and shooting it.
I knew of a guy loved the 6mmRem and would not hesitate to take a shot at 400 yards with it. He was a great shot. That is not saying that everyone can or should.
I know I
could use my .270Win against any North American Big Game. I know there are much more prefered calibers for some of the tougher bigger critters and I would probably want one of them. ) That doesn't mean I would want to intentionally go after "old Griz" with it, but with a proper load and proper shot I am confident it would do the job.
( Besides whatever the .270Win won't take care of, my .460 Weatherby Magnum will. <GRINZ>

That's great tag news, Wayne!
My father is 76 now, and an both my folks are avid hunters who retired to Southern Utah a dozen years ago to have better access to all the great areas up there.
Dad scored an early-season limited access bull elk tag a couple years ago and filled it with a huge trophy that's now mounted and shown in their den.
This year, they did score buck tags in their county (Iron) so the travel won't be such a grind.
While I'm not an avid hunter (haven't joined him in many years actually), I still enjoy shooting with him late in summer, and feel lucky to still be able to do so.
Good luck on this year's hunt!
