I'm extremely offended that you find great joy in my taking offence
Reminded me of Blazing Saddles ; "Howard Johnson is right about Gabby Johnson being right!"
As a person who enjoys offending people and you to cry to the mod when you get offended that cracks me up!
Yes people with developmental disabilities should not be made fun of, but I am positive that was not her intent.

let me say this: I don't expect that there was no "test-driving" prior to the wedding. That aspect of marriage is as important as the mental/emotional and spiritual sides. For there not having been at least once together, when a couple hopefully spends 1/3 of their lives together in the same bed, would be scary. It might have worked for my parents, who have been together since March of 1962, but those were different times.buffettbride wrote:but you make it seem like being invited to such a wedding is truly insulting to your intelligence, as if the bride is personally trying to offend and "dupe" you with white-dress wearing.RinglingRingling wrote:well, it does kinda throw the whole concept of chastity, even the illusion of it, out the window...buffettbride wrote:Now you're just being obtuse.RinglingRingling wrote:again.. whatever. thank you for demonstrating why discussing anything with you is a lost cause.
did I use the word "whore"? no. that was your insertion. thank you for putting words in my mouth. And since you have now fixated on it, it is necessary for you to start name-calling.
If you like.. I can certainly toss some adjectives your way. I guarantee they will be as endearing and as charming as you have been.
And, you really have no idea what I was saying. I wasn't calling anyone a whore. Immodest, yes. A whore, no.![]()
I know exactly what you were saying. You were saying it was insulting to be a guest at a wedding, and expected to bring a gift to a couple who had a child together before they were married, especially if the bride wore white as a supposed symbol of purity. Obviously, in your mind, a bride wearing white who had a child out of wedlock is not pure.
How or when I (or anyone) became a mother and the sanctity of my marriage have little or nothing to do with the gifts I may have received at my wedding.
i'm so sad for the person who considers you friend enough to invite you to their wedding.
If you want the illusion of chastity, fine. Even a bride who is 7-8 months along, fine. I don't care. I'll write that off as weight-gain or a gown that has an unflattering cut. I'll buy into the illusion. I really don't care. I'll go, I'll be happy for the couple.
Where I feel annoyance is the point where the illusion fails. Pure white with all it entails, falls apart when you have to take the baby out in mid-ceremony to change a diaper. In that respect, I am probably backward. But, like I said before... I don't claim to be perfectly progressive.

me wearing white had nothing to do with creating any ideas about chastity, which is what you seem to assume when any bride wears white. i picked the dress i liked because it was "the" dress. any bride understands where that is coming from.RinglingRingling wrote:let me say this: I don't expect that there was no "test-driving" prior to the wedding. as a guest at someone's wedding you should not go with hopes of not being illusioned, offended, or whatever. you should go to the wedding because at least one of the people up there is someone you care about and want to support them in matrimony, whether they are wearing white, green, or pink with purple polka dots.
you seem far more concerned with the tradition and impression of the wedding than you are the commitment the two being married are making, whether they have children or not.
you do all the test driving you want. it doesn't make me or your bride-to-be any less screwed, i mean, unpure.

Should Jerry Falwell ( I will not use any term of reverence or station) and I ever chance to meet in person, there would be very little other than our human condition that we share in common. He would feel that my lifestlye and beliefs would suit me perfectly for the fires of his hell. Am I donning an asbestos suit? What do you think?

fine. obviously there are nuances here that are not coming out in flat text. 65 million colours out there, one that has a certain traditional signficance, and there are a lot of facets. I don't know how to explain it in the full depth, width, and breadth.buffettbride wrote: me wearing white had nothing to do with creating any ideas about chastity, which is what you seem to assume when any bride wears white. i picked the dress i liked because it was "the" dress. any bride understands where that is coming from.

I would hope that if they got to this point (standing in front of God and two families), they understand the enormity of the promise they are making when they take their vows.
Does that mean that I am going to wish them ill or hope that it doesn't last if the bride just popped out quintuplets and decides to claim they were an immaculate conception? no. I hope they are happy and together for the rest of their lives. I just don't understand the need for the pretense. One could even say it sets a precedent for other events in the marriage.
Even that doesn't really come close to explaining it. But I've spent enough time on this one. I don't see the need to change my position any more than you probably do; I honestly thought you had been married, never called you a whore; and we should probably just let it drop with an agreement to disagree on the tradition and its continuation.

White wedding dresses were actually symbols of wealth because in the old, old, olden days (even before Larry was born), few people could afford to clean a "light" colored dress and most wedding dresses for common folk were brown or black.
I wore a white dress at my wedding and I was the out-of-wedlock mother of two.
So there.
I still want to kick Jerry Falwell in the nuts.
In my book, wearing a pure white dress on your first wedding day with your infant son sitting in the front row says, "I think you're a moron, gimme presents".
