First of all, those things that you see down here aren't cockroaches. They are palmetto bugs. What's the difference you ask? The palmetto bugs are bigger and more persistant than cockroaches, and even nuking them won't get them out of your motel room.RinglingRingling wrote:much better than naming a cockroach "state bug"Prthd119 wrote:I love it...!
If they can make "The Shag" the official dance of South Carolina...they can do this!![]()
I hear they're still trying to make the Palmetto Bug the offical bug of SC...
Maybe we should nominate Jodi! She's a wonderful bug and one we all like and love!
Secondly, the palmetto bug is NOT the state bug down here. It's true that there is a proposal to make the Everglades mosquito the state bird and the orange traffic cone the state flower, but if we have a state bug it would have to be the love bugs when they are in season.

If you have them and the common "German roach" try Borax such as "20 Mule Team" ( you can usually find it in the laundry soap section) and usually is inexspensive. You can either place the powder around in hidden places or you can try this .
You will need a couple of cups or so of Borax or so, a little cooking oil some chopped onion and a maybe a couple of tablespoons of sugar or powdered sugar, maybe a little water, and some plastic sandwich type bags. This is said to be safe for pets too.
Heat the oil and brown the onions ( cook until clear). Let the onions cool then mix all the items thouroughly. Then form it into round balls ( add water if you need it to keep them together, and place in the plastic bags..just a few in each bag. Place around in the "hidden areas" where the bugs are or will get to it.
The cooked onions add the scent to attract them, and the sugar gets them to eat it. This stuff normally does work. Then again you can just try the plain Borax by itself and see how it goes....
If it doesn't work for you, you can always use the rest of the Borax in your laundry.

Well now I live in RI so I don't have them anymore. But we lived in a marina and my parents live on the water and man oh man were they everywhere. But I'll pass along the info!
