I just checked this board to see how long it took the word to get over here...I wasn't surprised.

1. Traffic is not the issue. Jimmy can get to the Talkhouse in 15 minutes from his house in North Haven via 114/27/Further Lane if there's traffic/27/Cablevision parking lot.

2. Ramos was still expecting the boss until after Mac started playing.

3. Mac believed that JB could come.

4. Anyone who thinks Peter was calling Buffett fans to boost the door is an idiot and doesn't know anything about Peter or the Talkhouse...he thought he was doing them a favor. Most regulars and friends of Talkhouse folks knew before Friday...hell, everyone in Amagansett, Wainscott, East Hampton & Skag Harbor got the word...Vinnie the Barber knew. However, I'm sure that next time Peter wants to sell out the house, he'll come here and get the "high rollers" to come out and show us "Po Folks" in East Hampton how to party.

5. The chances of JB showing up randomly at the Talkhouse are inversely related to the number of Parrotheads that are expected to be there.
if the manager told anyone that anyone was going to
show and did not have a contract from the preformer
he WHORED out the person he told.. End of it..

Which word? The advance word that Jimmy might be there, or the after-the-fact word that he wasn't there?

Traffic may or may not have been an issue, but it did stink. It took me almost ten minutes just to make the turn from 114 to 27. Sag Harbor was also a mess. Overall the trip from the Shelter Island ferry to the Talkhouse took about 35-40 minutes instead of the expected 15 minutes

With no inside information at all, based solely on observation from less than ten feet away, I'd agree with this statement. I'd also say that the people sitting with Ramos (who I won't name, because Mac didn't point them out and I assume they probably wanted to remain anonymous) seemed to be expecting someone of some significance.

Most likely true, but I can't say with certainty because Mac is far too much of a gentleman and a professional to comment on this to the people who attended the show.

Nothing more than my opinion from the peanut gallery, because I don't know the management at the Talkhouse, but I agree that it certainly appears the information was not passed to try to increase attendance, but simply to make the information available. Assuming as you say that most of the population of eastern Long Island already knew of the possibility of Jimmy's appearance, information was passed on here too late to make much of a difference in attendance anyway. If you didn't live there or already have plans to be there, I doubt an announcement that late in the game was going to get you on the road to Amagansett on Friday of a long weekend. I doubt a BN announcement had to do with Jimmy's absence or presence at the Talkhouse; as you point out, people were still expecting him after Mac started playing, and if he didn't attend because a slew of parrotheads was expected following an announcement here on BN earlier in the day, a go/no-go decision would have been made long before Mac started playing.

If so, this probably would have increased the likelihood of an appearance on Friday. I saw less than ten (probably less than five) people dressed in very tasteful, dressy aloha shirts. No leis, no Buffett tour T-shirts (that I saw, but I might have missed them), nothing that looked overtly "parrothead." People were dressed mostly in summer vacation wear (shorts, jeans, T-shirts, casual tops). A good part of the audience was made up of people I've seen at other Mac shows. From standing outside talking before the show, I can say that a large percentage of the people who traveled from outside eastern Long Island bought tickets weeks ago with no consideration for whether or not Jimmy would make an appearance.

Again, from simple observation, I'd say Jimmy was expected.

I don't believe that the absence or presence of parrotheads was a factor on Friday; the parrotheads looked well outnumbered by the locals. Assuming Jimmy was planning to be there, there's no telling what made him change his mind. Could be anything from a sick kid to a scratchy throat to just not feeling like going out that night... You make it sound like parrotheads are the root of all evil on Long Island. But it was you and another of your's and Jimmy's neighbors who felt it necessary to show off last year and tell some of us non-Long Islanders where Jimmy's house is (in one case the actual address, in the other the road). No one asked; seemed like y'all felt the need to show off.... :-?

The bottom line is the same: Mac put on a great show, and anyone there for any other reason than to see Mac play has no right to be disappointed.

Just so I don't have to post again, I'll try to set this straight.

Jimmy is a friend of the Talkhouse & company. He shows up on short or no notice, after getting the logistics worked out with someone there - he does it because he loves to entertain small groups. The Talkhouse is safe, his kind of place, and close to the house. The Talkhouse folks will call friends and give them a heads up when "someone special" (like Paul Simon who bought the house drinks last year) my show up. By friends I mean that our kids go to school together, hang out, etc. You should remember that Jimmy did the Soldier Ride benefit last year. This was not some event set up by HK Management.

This is why the person from Idaho who used the word "whore" does not get it...and does not deserve getting it.

Check out the Talkhouse here: http://www.stephentalkhouse.com

or Peter, here:

http://www.easthamptonstar.com/20040722/feat1.htm

Peter & company did give folks a heads-up to JB coming as a favor. A favor to the parrotheads because they would enjoy it, and to friends just because. Again, anyone who believes that Peter did this for any other reason may not be an idiot, but they walk, talk, and whine like one. If six more tickets were sold, I'd be amazed. Also, the artist gets most of the ticket sales, not the Talkhouse. And with parrotheads throwing money around like manhole covers, I doubt if the Talkhouse gained anything from Peter spreading the word.

Regarding the Personal Message I received (I feel honored!) - Several of us, including Ramos & Mac I might add, heard of the Apologist offering up his regrets to some people for JB not showing before the room was emptied for the next show. Nice touch, real nice touch. Turn a nice performance by a nice guy into something about you. The apology seemed to start out here as a sincere one to board members who may come in hopes of seeing JB (who wouldn't?), then somehow the Kool-Aid was shared and the Apologist had morphed into a victim because the bad ole Peter Honerkamp. Gimme a f**king break - it's like blaming the waiter for a bad meal...but wait, that's what all tourists do.

So, SGH, you got it right on most or your observations - traffic sucks, JB may or may not show for whatever reason, and Peter was just trying to be the nice guy that he is. However, at my age, I have no reason to show off to anyone but my children. No, I did not imply that parrotheads are the root of all evil. There has been one instance here when a crowd of 8 - 10 showed up, obviously caring not about the performer, hoping for a Buffett showing (they were wearing nametags too!). This particular performer will probably not come back here.

No, I did not give out JB's address, but I did tell one of you that you "passed by" his place on the way over. I could have also said that they passed Julie Andrew's house also (uh-oh, now I'll have the stalkers from JulieAndrewsNews.com jumping on my case!). I told EFAJ where he could see the plane (like that's a big secret) after he asked.

Happy Fourth

HMMM Lets see just what don't I get???

A . I stated that if I buy tix to a Mac show I do not expect to see Jimmy
behind a mic..
B .. I stated that if there were no contract with the artist
that it is wrong to announce that he/she will be there.. HMMM

C.. If the Talkhouse managment wanted to "Help" Parrotheads.
by letting us know Jimmy was to be there Why not just use the
normal Channels.. IE.. Radio,TV, or Newsprint ads..
By using a person to make the announcement they have
built a wall where they don't take the blame if it all falls down..

and really just what does the fact that I live in Idaho
make one bit of matter???

Hmmm..... this tourist left a 30% tip at a restaurant in Montauk on Friday. I guess you don't need our kind on Long Island, after all.....? I live in a tourist town. Some tourists are cheap b*stards, but not all of them.......

That crowd may have shown up at another show, but it wasn't the case on Friday and I've never seen fans like that at the Talkhouse for a Mac show. Please don't paint all Buffett fans with the same brush. We were there to see Mac play, and were appreciative of his show.

Yes, that's what you said that evening. But in a similar thread after Mac's show last year, you posted that Jimmy was sitting at home on [street name] with the family. The mods went back and deleted the street name.... And while you're certainly not accountable for it, one of your other neighbors *did* mention an actual address on the ferry to CT the next day... completely unsolicited....

As I've said before, I have no issue at all with Jimmy not being there Friday. I don't have an issue with the Talkhouse management spreading the word. I do have an issue with you implying that parrotheads may have been the reason Jimmy chose to stay away. If that was indeed the case, it'd be a real shame, because the parrotheads who were there Friday are NOT the ones who give parrotheads a bad name.... They were Mac fans who also happened to be headed for the Jones Beach show. Last year many of the same people made the trip to the Talkhouse from as far away as NH and PA despite the fact that there was no Buffett show on Long Island that weekend. Jimmy obviously has absolutely no apologies to make for not being at Stephen Talkhouse on Friday, but please don't imply that Mac's fans drove Jimmy away... :-?

The way I look at it, Jimmy Buffett changed his mind for some reason.... Now there's a shocker.... :D :D

And the very bottom line is still the same. Those who were at the Stephen Talkhouse on Friday night saw and heard a terrific show! :D

Happy Fourth to you, too. :D

When Buffett appeared during Jerry Jeff's birthday festivities a few years ago in Texas do think that was actually sealed in ink somewhere? When Jerry Jeff appears at Meeting of the Minds do you think Buffett's potential appearance is also written up in some contract? Although it may not be the case here there is a little something called an "impromptu" appearance that doesn't need to be written up in a contract. The performer does it because they want to.

True.. But my point is

do not announce an Appearance by______ (or worse a surprise )

unless you have ink on paper..
Will Jimmy show??? don't know
But the Pholks at MOTM haven't slipped anyone the word that he WILL..
that is my point.. yes an Impromptu show would be great..
but do not slip the rumor that _____ is going to show..

Everyone:

I would appreciate if everyone, in the spirit of my original post, would simply let this matter drop.

Nothing positive can come from further debate.

I would *so* rather be known as a "visitor".... "Tourist" has so many negative connotations..... I feel like a "visitor" is someone visiting, but being respectful of local customs, etc. I see tourists as the ones who b*tch, "That's not how we do it at home!"

And then there's the bumper sticker: "Why do they call it 'tourist season' when we can't shoot them?" :)

Sounds like a few misunderstandings are at the heart of this thread, as with many Internet interactions. Let's all keep in mind that what we're reading and what someone may have intended to say are often very different animules. I think most people tend to be nicer in person than they seem online, and I'd bet it's due in no small part to the limitations of this medium.

I saw Mac when he was out here in the Bay Area last year. I'm sure that anyone who went to see him in LI got their money's worth, Jimmy or no Jimmy. He's truly a fine artist in his own right.

Enjoying the Fifth after a happy Fourth,
