Space Shuttle Discovery

Scheduled for launch 3:53ET today (Saturday)

One of the many cool things about living in central Florida is that we can watch the shuttle launches from home. There is continuous coverage on local news channels on launch day.

Today's launch is on hold due to weather concerns, they will not launch if there are thunderclouds within 20 miles of the Shuttle landing area, so that if the shuttle needs to land after launch the area is safe for landing.

Hope the weather clears, but it doesn't look promising for today.

You guys can see it from your house? How cool is that! I would love to see a shuttle launch in person. However, if things keep going the way they've been going, there may not be a space program much longer.

The night launches are spectacular, the whole eastern sky lights up.

We were surprised when we first moved here how clear the launches are from Orlando. The launch site is about 40 miles east of us, but anyplace with a clear sightline to the East can see the launches really well!

I'm from South Florida(Hollywood) and we could see the shuttle from there.

You can see night launches from here in Southeast Georgia. (You cannot miss the initial launch/ take off of the orbiter/shuttle either. It definitely lights up the southeastern hosizon.) Anyone can see most anything they launch, and if it is clear and the light pollution is not too bad. and in a large open area as being on the river. I have even seen the SRB's separate from the orbiter/shuttle while standing on the Pavillion/waterfront in St. Marys.

Before they changed the flight path of the returning shuttle, one could hear the sonic boom of it returning.

I know there are launch windows and understand them. What I don't unserstand, is why they even give a serious try, for afternoon launches this time of year. When they already know the weather patterns bring afternoon thunderboomers.
