Red Wing & NHL legend Steve Yzerman announces retirement today after 22 seasons as Red Wing captain. The 6th leading scorer in NHL history and 3 time Stanley Cup winner took the Red Wings from being known as the Detroit "Dead Wings" to being one of the most feared and respected teams for the past 10 years. 8)

As an avid hockey fan who has had the pleasure to keep a close eye on his career here in the state of Michigan I can say he was a true credit to the game and he'll truly be missed. He was always a supreme ambassador for the Wings and the League and his determination to lead and succeed with the Red Wings was second to none!

It was unfortunate that his career didn't end on a more upbeat note but the Red Wings demise in this years playoffs certainly wasn't attributable to Stevie Y!

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES CAPTAIN!!

Yzerman was a credit to the game. He's going to the Hall of Fame as soon as he's eligible.

Yes..

Don't take this wrong but didn't Hockey just have it's draft??

I hope he told Managment so they could draft with that in mind..

The draft in hockey isn't like the football or basketball draft. Seldom are you drafting someone that will immediately step into the lineup (especially when the Red Wings were drafting number 30). Usually Junior Hockey League players (the equivalent of High School players) are the most coveted draftees and they're usually a few years away from playing in the NHL.

Point being, whether Yzerman played this season or not it had NO bearing upon who they drafted this season because they already knew he had 1 more season at most left in him so if they felt they needed another center they would have drafted one if the right one was available.
