You can do it!!!!!
I smoked a pack a day. Quit for months at a time. Picked it back up and was up to a pack a day again within a week. Several times.
UNTIL January 14, 2002.
Let me say that again, January 14, 2002!
It bears repeating:
JANUARY 14, 2002!!!
I just came back from my weekly pool league. Bar full of smokers.
JANUARY 14, 2002!!!
Do the patch. Do the Zyban (wellbutrin). Do whatever it takes. 4 and a half f***ing years smoke free.
You can do it!!!!!
PM me. 4 and a half years! Please do it for yourself. If that ain't good enough, do it for the ones you love. But for God's sake, DO IT!!!!
I did. I know I can help you.
p.s. You didn't give an option for those of use who have SUCCEEDED!!!!!

Dunno if this will help or not, Mal. I had to share.
I lost my Auntie Ginna on Tuesday.
She was never a smoker, just natural causes. But had a good life.
My Auntie Dor developed Alzheimers in the last few years.
She doesn't know her sister died.
I got this from my mother tonight.
Just a smidge of information on Auntie Dor. Dad talked to Bev (my cousin's wife) this afternoon and so far they haven't told her anything. I guess they plan on taking her to the funeral home tomorrow and telling her there. She spends most of her time in bed these days. Dad asked about the smoking problem and she's stopped. Wasn't her idea. Something about a lounge chair that she had, that needed to be replaced. Dave (my cousin) bought her a new one and shortly afterward, found a cigarette burn in it. Another time someone saw her carrying a cigarette around for an hour.......she didn't know what to do with it. Dave told Sheri and Deb (also cousins) that they could keep wasting their money if they wanted to buy them for her, but when they (Dave and Bev) got to the house, they were going to throw them away. So.......they just stopped buying them and that's the end of smoking. Too sad.

i've never put on a second one, but if after work the craving was unbearable, i'd put on a fresh patch to help kick start it. i only did that the first 2 days i think, and after that i was doin' pretty good.Moonie wrote:at my weakest moments, I'd put on another patch, when I thought I just could not go on without a cigarette, figured it could no be as bad a smoking a cigarette....I'd get that nicotine rush and the intense urge for nicotine would pass...buffettbride wrote:Good job!!!Moonie wrote:I quit in 1994, haven't had nicotine since, not once
did the patch thing..
The urge for a cigarette will pass, whether you smoke one or not...
The patch makes the urges much more bearable to resist! I kinda press it harder into my arm when I'm having a really hard time.I know that doesn't really do anything, but it makes me feel better.
and sunflower seeds. lots and lots and lots of them. my mouth is sore and raw from them, but they really do help.
i figured out last week that i have officially smoked more of my life than i hadn't smoked. i'm 31 and i started when i was 15.

You are sooooo sweet Jen!!! It's good to see you around these parts again.Island_Lullaby wrote:hey Mal...good luck to you!!! Seriously, quitting smoking is like losing your best friend. It probably sounds weird if you've never smoked, but if you have, it prolly makes sense.
Definitely try the patch, and as Y-NO suggestion, coupling it with Zyban is supposed to do wonders too. The patch just makes me not want to hurt someone because I can't have a smoke.

You go through stages..you have completed stage one...
I cannot tell you that stage two or three are easier, but ..your sense of accomplishment is just overwhelming when you get there..
I guess it comes at different times for everyone, but when you've hit the six month mark, and you are confident that you'll never backslide you'll feel better about yourself than anything you have ever done..
the 12 step program will help cocaine, alcohol, and drugs, but not nicotine, that tells you just how addicting it is...
and you SHOULD be proud of what you have now accomplished and the feeling only gets better.

And congrats on being a quitter. I'm soooo jealous. I can't wait until I can calculate my amount of time quitting in years instead of days or weeks!

Thanks so much Suzie. Tonight is probably the toughest I've had so far, and I'll be happy when I get through it.

Want to know what got me through? (Besides the patch and the drugs?) Do not say "I quit". Think of what your brain is thinking: "I am a quitter. I can't even succeed at smoking." Your brain does not like negatives.buffettbride wrote:I meant to, but I hosed up the poll. Maybe a mod can fix it.Y-NO-9-O wrote:

Be positive. Tell yourself: "I AM a non-smoker". "I AM smoke-free". Keep that mantra going. You ARE A NON-SMOKER! YOU ARE!!!! YOU!!!

I hear ya. I think about that sometimes, if someone were to ask, it would feel weird saying, "I don't smoke." because that hasn't been the case for about as long as I can remember.Y-NO-9-O wrote:Want to know what got me through? I really really really really really want this to be the time it really happens. Yes, sometimes I need to convince myself too...

OMFG, don't feel weird saying that! That is the PROUDEST thing I proclaim. Especially with the people who knew me when I was smokey. Smokers envy saying that ABOUT me.buffettbride wrote:I hear ya. It's probably the only bad habit I haven't picked up....BUT I want to say HANG TOUGH to you, Mal and anyone trying to give it up!
I lost both of my parents at a relatively young age to tobacco related illnesses.....I wish they both had been able to kick it at your age....what a wonderful old age they would have had together!!
