My lovely wife and I have been talking about this for some time now, like nearly 2 years. We tried a year and a half ago, on New Years, she made 4 days, and I made a week and a half. She got so fed up with my bitchy attitude, she lit a smoke and put one in my mouth.

The lovely wife has been in the hospital for 2 days now (hopefully nothing serious - the baby is just fine - they think gall bladder or ulcer) so she has been without for as long. I think this thread just convinced me to go grab my 1/2 bottle of Wellbutrin from the last time I tried. Maybe pick up some patches on my way to the hospital as well...

MR OC and I both quit in 83. It was tough and we've had a couple short relapses over the years but they were very short. Once you quit it just feels much worst to start. The reason we quit is probably part of the reason for you. We had kids. We don't want them to smoke and we know if we did they would.
Good luck. You can do it. You've already gotten through the worst of it even though it doesn't feel like it.

Never smoked cigarettes but I did smoke a few cigars a week.
A couple of weeks ago after a coworker died of lung cancer and that was sort of a reality check, especially with him talking to me about with almost no voice. I'm thinking of my son on this one, now if I could just get my weight in check.

One thing at a time. Otherwise it's just too much - take the cigars first, then the weight. :)

Congrats, Mal! Good for you. I'm pulling for you...

I started smoking at 19 to try to stay awake studying for a test in college. Like you said, stupid thing to start. But man, what a rush!

Quit at 22 or so. Then at 24, got roommates who smoked, and started up again just for fun. Knew I could quit easy, but I couldn't!

Quit for good two years later when I started dating my husband and he looked at me like I was crazy when he saw me with a cigarette in my mouth. Both his parents chainsmoked and have many health problems. December 1984. Twenty-one years smoke free.

I've been tempted MANY times to smoke just one, but I know I'd be hooked immediately if I did. I had to keep learning that the easiest one to say no to is the first one.

smoked for 10 years...switch to skoal/copenhagen for two years..then went cold turkey. It kind of worked. I have 5 or 6 cigs a year and 5-6 dips a year. Only when a little bit drunk. :D

Keep up the good work Mal.

I quit in 1980. Went to a bachelor party for one of my best friends and knew I was going to get stoopid drunk, took three packs with me on a mission to smoke as many as possible. I was literally ill for three days after and couldn't be around one. From there it was easy.

My cravings always came on the golf course and the sh*tter and if you have seen my golf game you'll understand the correlation

I've smoked for years, and although I don't smoke as much anymore, I still manage to get my fix.

Of course, ALL of it was SECOND HAND. I'd just like to say "Thanks".

Thanks so much everyone for sharing your stories. I made it through the night. Thursday nights are tough 'cause that's when the guys come over and play darts and video games and smoke like fiends. It was hard knowing there were cigarettes in the house and I could have one if I wanted...but I didn't. Yay me!

GREAT NEWS!! and you've jumped over the first big hurdle.

The addiciton to nicotine will ease some as each day goes by, do not give in to the urge for nicotine.

the psychological addiciton to smoking easier is to defeat than the nicotine part of it, althought the psychological aspect is every bit as real as the nicotine.

The whole thing is just a habit. The first couple of weeks you are kinda in a blurr, like, that's all that's on you mind...cigarette and smoking...it's a very life altering experience, ridding youself of this habit..

Get ready for finding others cigarette smoke, and their smell very offensive, and wondering...did I smell that bad....yes, yes you did.

That's when you really get the fortitude to stick with it...

I can already tell the difference in the way I smell, and others too, to a degree. When I walk out of the building, I have to walk through the smoking area. It's not really tempting in that it makes me want to smoke, but I really hope the day comes when I find it repulsive, 'cause right now.

I hope it's not too wrong that I'm enjoying 2nd-hand smoke.

THAT will definately pass. and after some time, you'll want to tell the smoker how really offensive you find his habit, to those that choose not to smoke... :wench:

but that, too will pass..and you kinda figure they'd really like to quit...but can't, or won't.

which again, will fortify your resolve...

i just don't want to be a cranky ex-smoker. it's hard to have that mentality though.

but, it is kinda nice because the constant "i want a cigarette" feeling has definitely passed and the bad cravings are really few and far between. it's mostly the mental challenge now of not letting myself slip.

i'm soooo the kind of person that can really never have one again or it's back to square one. i don't just want one cigarette, i want a whole pack.

what is really funny is hubby and i used to "argue" over who got to go to the gas station so we could get a break from the kids. now we argue over who has to go because that's where the Camel Lights are just there staring you in the face.

I was never too cranky, after the first month, but coming out of a dept. store and having to navigate through the outside smoke hole, where the smokers were became digusting...

because when I got in my car I could smell the smoke on my clothes, from just walking through their fog.

Those smoke holes should be located farther from the entrance/exit. There is a stench left behind even after the smokers have left the area.

I kept a 1/2 pack of the brand that I smoked, in my kitchen cabinet...for well over a year after I quit smoking...
