Planning a trip for June of 2008 - Pharmboy and I and our two daughters (will be 30 and 22).

This thread has been really helpful in getting ideas for "things to do."

Need hotel suggestions!!!

Nothing really expensive. We won't be spending alot of time in the room since there are so many things to do ... 8)

seriosuly though Statue of Liberty, Empire state, Ground Zero. Those tourist buses are really a good way to see the city in my opinion. You can hop on an doff so you can experience what you want to. Most NYers hate those buses but they're good for what they are.
Yankee Stadium is probably going to be kinda cold and lonely after Sept. 30

NYC is a great city. Some of my favorite spots

1. Empire State Building
2. Statue of Liberty - I was there the weekend after the huge ice storm on the east coast back in the 1990's, it was cold, very slippery but an awesome sight.
3. Museum of Modern Art - An old Rockefeller mansion with great exhibits.
4. Soho
5. Times Square
6. St. Patricks Cathedral

We head up 2-3 times a year for a show. Definately see the Blue Man Group. NYC is the only place to see it.

Some eating establishments we enjoy

1. Victor's Cafe - Amazing Cuban Food
2. Bistro Latino - A great latin restaurant live music on weekends.
3. Lindy's - nice deli
4. Trattoria Trecolori - Very good Italian
5. Pomaire - Chilean - good stuff

Make sure you take a taxi ride across town. If you get a good cabbie it will be more exciting than most roller coasters.

All of the above but add:

The Cloisters

Playing with the toys at FAO Schwartz

Carriage ride in Central Park

lunch at Rumpelmayer's Deli

St. Patrick's yes, but how about St. John the Divine up near Columbia

Grand Central Station

Grammercy Park

the United Nations tour

Used to also say lunch at the Palm Court at the Plaza but understand the hotel is now condos. Sigh.

Riverside Tower Hotel. http://www.riversidetowerhotel.com/#rate It ain't much to look at, but it's cheap (for NYC) clean, and reasonably convenient on the Upper West side. I have stayed there before, so this isn't a blind recommendation.

Central Park all day is a must. Just to wander through the park, Belvedere's Castle, skating at Wollman Rink, going to the Zoo, and just all around people watching.

Top of the Rock, definitely.

Wander Greenwich Village, definitely.

Bronx Zoo is awesome.

Time Square at night, just to see it.

A Broadway show. Or if you're more daring, something off or off-off broadway.

Plus, find a real swanky hotel, mostly midtown east, and order yourself a fancy cocktail. It'll set you back a bit, but for half an hour, you can feel like royalty.

Times Square, Rockefeller Plaza (wave hi to Larry). If there's no skating rink, then it's a market, I believe.

None of these are new ideas, but here's my list:

Day 1: DOWNTOWN TOURISTY
DOWNTOWN: Ground Zero/Wall Street/NYSE/Walk along Hudson River Waterfront for St. Lib. views/Tribeca for dinner (choice of best restaurants in the city or more divey places)/Staten Island Ferry (weather permitting)

Day 2: UPTOWN TOURISTY
MIDTOWN: Rock Center/St. Pat's Cathedral/5th Ave Shopping
EASTSIDE: Walk up Madison to about 90th, and down Park or 5th. Stop at museums OR
WESTSIDE: Zabar's/Central Park Picnic/Museum Natural History/Lincoln Center
Dinner in Midtown, tons of options

Day 3: MY IDEAL SATURDAY
BELOW 14th St: Meander through W. Village (make sure to hit Bleecker, W4th, Bedford) and SoHo (best shopping in city)/have dinner in Meatpacking (trendiest restaurants)/go to some Jazz in Village
ABOVE 14th St: Union Sq/Gramercy Park

Agree that you should take in a Yankee game. If you're someone who loves views from high places, I'd do Top of the Rock over Empire State. The area around ESB is not anything great so it would require a special trip.

My favorite restaurants:
Rosa Mexicano - West Side (Columbus Circle) - Upscale Mexican w/ amazing margaritas
Tao - Midtown - eclectic Asian, very popular
Artisanal - Midtown(ish) - Cheese and wine
Jubilee - Midtown East - reasonably priced bistro
PJ Clarke's - Midtown East/West Side/Downtown (on waterfront) - pub-type food and atmosphere
Bubby's - Tribeca - comfort food
Bouley - Tribeca - 4 star, fancy
Walker's - Tribeca - pub food and atmosphere
Spotted Pig - W Village - popular, trendy pub
Risotteria - W. Village - dozens of delicious risotto options
Peanut Butter Company - W. Village - every imaginable PB sandwich
Tortilla Flats - W. Village - divey Mexican, very popular
Otto - Village - upscale pizza, good wine
Arturo's - Village - Divey pizza with live music, great energy
Paradou - Meatpacking - bistro, less attitude, outdoor garden
Vento - Meatpacking - Italian, some attitude
Spice Market - Meatpacking - some attitude, eclectic Asian

Just about everybody has mentioned Times Square. I don't understand why. I absolutely hate the area and avoid it like the plague. If I do have to walk through, my blood pressure rises a hundred points. I think a lot of people dislike NYC they base their impressions on what they see in Times Sq. It's not representative of the rest of the city. If you MUST go, take a cab ride through at rush hour, you will get enough time to look around and see the people without being accosted by the crowds, pickpocketers, etc.

I just went to the Yanks game yesterday and I'm not a Yankees fan (I would say go Braves but there is no where left for them to go)...anyway, I found myself screaming til I was hoarse for them. What a great place. What a great crowd.
