House easily approves Internet gambling ban

Post by AdamBomb8 »

The U.S. House on Tuesday approved a Republican-written bill to crack down on Internet gambling, in what critics said was an election-year appeal to the party's conservative base.

The House voted 317-93 to impose a ban on most forms of Internet gambling by making it illegal for banks and credit card companies to make payments to online gambling sites. Internet gambling generates some $12 billion annually worldwide, half from American gamblers.

The bill exempted horse racing and lotteries from the ban.

"This is a scourge on our society. It causes innumerable problems," Republican Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, one of the bill's sponsors, said on the House floor before the vote.

The House bill, which was also sponsored by Jim Leach of Iowa, is part of the Republican party's emphasis on moral values as congressional elections approach this fall.

So NO real surprise on how they legislate on how we spend OUR OWN money....but we cannot really control how THEY decide to spend OURS.....

"Two bridges to No Where" in Alaska ring a bell to anyone? How about the rest of the "pork barrel spending" they legislate.....

Adding "pork barrel spending" legislation onto bills affecting our troops and veterans, sound familiar?

Wasn't there something about "illegal banking" involving Congress/ Senate not too long ago?

If they could tax it, they wouldn't care, as long as they got THEIR CUT/share. It being overseas..........they can't touch it and no doubt makes them a tad bit unhappy, that they can't claim it, and waste it on themseleves and more "pork barrel spending"!

I am Republican, but I am not the type of Republican that we have representing us now. Man I wish the libertarians would grow into a viable party.

Without a doubt. Or at least figure out a way to get term limits so fresh blood gets in there and stands a chance.

Sam I totally agree with you. Notice Horse racing and lotteries were excluded which are both done and taxable in the states. Just legalize it in the states and make more money.

term limits are not the answer. Accurate districting where no incumbent or incumbent party has an 70% DPQ/RPQ is. And none of this "let's redistrict every 5, no 3, no 2, aw he!!.. we'll draw the districts before every primary" crap either.

I know the goverment takes 37% off the top of a large lottery win. ( if you win $1 Million in the lottery the goverment takes $370,000 of it) Not sure how much they take out of dog or horse racing winnings.

No doubt someone will come up with a work around, for this and create some new businesses with some sort "Off-shore banks" or something.

I wonder how/if this will affect the "casino boats" or people that visit, say the Bahamas or elsewhere that gamble and use credit cards.
