What languages do you speak?
I need to take a language, 4 semesters for my history major. I mainly am into ancient/medieval history. Right now I'm registered for both latin and ancient greek. I am actually thinking about taking them both although my brain is telling me to take only one. Eventually if I want to go on to an ancient history grad program I may need French as well. I took that once many moons ago and did very poorly. I don't have alot of confidence in language study. I was hoping by choosing a dead language there would be no pressure to understand somebody speaking with an accent.

I took German all 4 years of high school (class of 85), spoke the language pretty well, then in 2000 spent a week in both Germany and France.
I had never spoken a word of French, but after my week in Paris, I got along just as well as I did in Germany.
Point? None proabably, but whatever you decide to learn, take a trip where the language is spoken (tough to do for Latin and Greek) but dive head first into it and you will be amazed at what you learn. specially when you need to eat!

I just got done taking 4 years of Spanish in High School... although my schedule will not permit this coming semester, I hope to continue my studies at the University level...
but until then, I just have to remember the most important thing in Spanish... just say "Sí" and Smile and Nod!!
Ancient Greek... now that would be cool to learn!

Either Greek or Latin will serve you in grad school, if you're going to study ancient history. I loved Greek. Didn't have a chance to study Latin. Good luck.
Gentilly ... 42 years is a long time to wait .... a Northeast Texas woman can hope.

Since Latin is the root of all the Romance languages (English, French Spanish, etc) learning it makes all the others much easier.East Texas Parrothead wrote:Either Greek or Latin will serve you in grad school, if you're going to study ancient history. hehe that sounds like mejonesbeach10 wrote:I took Spanish during high school, including AP Spanish (though I did poorly). I'm okay and could probably get by in a Latin country.
I think it was because I had already been accepted into college and into the honors program there so I just stopped caring about 4th hour Spanish

Hehe, well I took it junior year, and by the time May came around I was burnt out form the rest of my classes. I knew the chances of me doing well were slim (hey, I'm going up against kids that speak spanish all the time). Plus I knew that I could do really well in my other two APs if I put the time into those (Biology and Euro History). So I did and got 5's in those.prrthd1987 wrote:hehe that sounds like mejonesbeach10 wrote:I took Spanish during high school, including AP Spanish (though I did poorly). Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar
