This is my summary of our vacation!

I will edit these posts with pictures, once Peggy is done sorting through the 1500+ images she took, that is.

DAY ONE (Saturday): DISASTER.
The day actually started out OK. We stopped by Roger & Lisa’s house (Lisa34 at BN) for their 4th of July party. Lindsey (Harbour Baby) was there, too. Lisa drove us to the airport, and we were off. We had a red-eye flight leaving at 7pm. We got our boarding passes, but had to complain. The 7 hour flight to Dublin, we weren’t sitting together! Got it fixed, and glanced at the Dublin-to-Glasgow tickets only to assure we were together. We were.

It wasn’t until we landed in Dublin at 8am-ish that I looked more carefully at those boarding passes. Our connecting flight to Glasgow, wasn’t until after 8PM!!! Clearly a mistake, my itinerary said Noon. We went to get it fixed, and were told our flight had been cancelled. “Didn’t they tell you?” “Clearly NOT!”. Unfortunately, since we had already declared our intentions to stay at the airport and not venture into the city, it was more paperwork than it was worth to go anywhere, so we were stuck in the airport for 12 hours. It actually turned out to be longer, since that flight was delayed, too. We finally got to Glasgow around 10pm. Then we had to get the rental car.

I went to the Avis desk, while Peggy went to retrieve luggage. Nobody there. A line started to form, finally a lady ran by and said, “I’m dealing with something, I’ll be back in 10 minutes.”. So I got out of line, went to help Peggy, got back in line. The lady finally returned 20 minutes later. When it was finally my turn in line, she told me she had my reservation, but was having problems. There was no way that I should have been promised THAT rate. I had documentation. She said it was wrong, she couldn’t even process it. I told her to figure out how. Then she told me they didn’t have any of the type of car I reserved (a Mercedes-Benz). She gave me a Peugeat instead. I was too tired to argue, I had now been up since 8 am Saturday, and local time here (6 hour difference) was now 11pm on SUNDAY!

Got the car, got to the hotel, went to bed. Finally.

DAY THREE (Monday): BAD.

We woke up early, 6:30. Today was the one day where we had an actual schedule to keep. We needed to be up to Skye by 1:30pm to catch our ferry over to the Isle of Lewis. The ferry only goes once or twice a day. The drive should have taken about 3 hours, so we left the hotel by 8, giving us plenty of time to spare. Not so. First, the roads leading out of Glasgow were poorly labeled, and we had trouble getting pointed in the right direction. Once we did, we discovered just how wide the roads weren’t. In addition to learning to drive on the other side of the car, and other side of the road, we were dealing with poorly labeled intersections, and narrow lanes.

We got up to Loch Lomand, and it cost us. On a narrow 2-lane road, a tour bus came over the center line. It forced us off the road, and we ended up with a flat tire. Somehow, even though we didn’t hit anything, the license plate broke off, too. It took quite a while to figure out how to change a tire on a French car, especially since I was doing it in the mud.

Finally got it going, but had lost nearly an hour. So we had to try to make up time. This was our next mistake. Peggy is pregnant, she was tired, she hadn’t eaten much, and we started driving faster on twisty-turny roads. Long story short, she got sick. We had to stop 8 times for her to throw up. We kept pressing on, though, but when we got near Skye, it became apparent that we weren’t going to make the ferry on time.

So we gave up. We had already paid for the ferry, and for the room we were staying at on Lewis. So that was wasted money. But it was clear that it wasn’t in the cards.

Finally, we stopped at Eileen Donan castle. This was the first thing on the entire trip that had gone well. It was beautiful, and getting Peggy out with a camera seemed to help her feel better. She got some amazing photos. (Pictures will be coming soon…) Eileen Donan Castle is a rebuilt historic 15th century castle, and is a bit touristy, but we enjoyed it.

We trekked on, needing now to find a place to stay. Well, it’s high tourist season. There aren’t many rooms available. I finally found a room in a boarding house/B&B in Lower Breakish, but had to trek 2 miles down a 1-lane road to find it. We ended up having dinner at a small road-side diner, then getting to bed. We’ll try to make Tuesday a better day.

DAY FOUR (Tuesday)…BETTER

Things finally have started to turn around now. We started the morning with breakfast, then drove down the coast towards Armadale Castle. Beautiful castle ruin, with beautiful grounds. Very nice, Peggy got some more great pictures. Looking at the map, we saw another castle listed over on the other side of the peninsula towards Ord, so cut across on a tiny one-lane road. The road was so narrow that the grass was scraping BOTH sides of the car at once. Never found the castle, though. It was interesting….this is as far into the middle of nowhere that I have ever been! Before we left the island, we made a stop in Kyleakin to photograph another ruin. Then we drove across the country before heading north to Inverness. First we stopped at an old abandoned church for pictures, then stopped to get pictures of a waterfall. It was here that we had one of the most interesting experiences of the whole trip.

As Peggy took the pictures, I was leaning up against the car, looking down the mountain valley. I saw a plane in the distance. I said, “Plane”. Then I heard it and realized what I was seeing. I said, “PEGGY, LEFT, TURN LEFT NOW!!!!!!” She did, just in time to get 2 pictures of it as it buzzed us, maybe 100 feet off the ground, and disappeared between the mountains behind us. It was like something out of a James Bond movie! I’m pretty sure it was an RAF Tornado. Definitely a first for me!

We drove on, got to Loch Ness, and headed North. Made a stop a Urquhart Castle on the Loch. Beautiful ruin of an 11th century fortress. Fairly big attraction for tourists, because of its position, it’s where they like to look for the Loch Ness Monster.

We got to Inverness, headed through the city center, and found our way to Kilravock Castle. This is a13th century castle, still intact. This is where we spent the night, in the High Tower room!!! It was a unique experience, we had to go up 3 stories on a stone spiral staircase to get to our room. Huge bed, huge room! We went out for dinner at Blackfriars Pub in Inverness, but then just went back to the castle to enjoy our accommodations! I highly recommend it. The grounds are supposed to be very nice, too, but there were so many bugs, we only lasted about 3 minutes.

DAY FIVE ( Wednesday)…VERY GOOD

Well, we woke up in a castle! Good start. Breakfast was downstairs, and was excellent. We headed out from there to Cawdor Castle, an intact 14th Century castle nearby. Beautiful Castle, amazing grounds…they have manicured gardens and even a hedge maze!!!

From Cawdor, we proceeded to the Culloden Battle Field. This is the site where the battle took place in 1745 in which the Jacobite Rebellion was destroyed once and for all. Not that much to see, but interesting from a historical perspective. A few miles up the road, we stopped to visit the Clava Cairns. This was also interesting, a 4000 year old burial ground.

After a quick stop in Inverness for a touch of shopping, we headed south towards Edinburgh. This was to be the highlight of our trip. Along the way, a couple of stops for some quick photos, Blair Castle, and the Ruthven Barracks.

When we reached Edinburgh, we proceeded to the Royal Mile. This is the road that stretches from Edinburgh Castle to Holyroodhouse in downtown Edinburgh. It is the oldest, most historic part of the city. We went there first, because the hotel I had us staying in for the next two nights (including our anniversary), The Wtichery, was RIGHT NEXT DOOR TO THE CASTLE!!! This hotel was spectacular. In fact, it is where Michael Douglass and Catherine Zeta-Jones spent their honeymoon. So I guess it’s good enough for us. We were in the Library Suite. This room was the most amazing place I have ever seen! We had a two level, 5 room suite, with a full kitchen, two bathrooms, dining room, two fireplaces (including one in the bathroom), a HUGH bathtub, champagne waiting for us in the room, a huge four-poster, with a secret compartment with a hidden TV/DVD, and secret entrances through bookcases.

We stepped out for dinner at Deacon Brodies pub. After dinner, we decided to just head back to the room and enjoy it. Heck, for as much as we paid, we probably should have never left the room!

DAY SIX (Thursday)…NEARLY PERFECT

Happy Anniversary, Peggy!!! Ten Years Today. And you survived it!

Today, we never once touched the car. Today we just walked the Royal Mile. We started with a visit to Mary Kings Close. In this, the oldest part of town, the Royal Family lived on either end of the city, but in the middle, the working class and the poor lived. The “closes” were the tiny little side streets that the poor lived on. Over time, the city grew upwards, and street level has been raised by several stories. But the old city is still underground. In some places, you can take tours underground to see the old city. An interesting perspective on the differences in class levels in the old times.

We left there, and just walked. Peggy of course had her camera. We stopped to see St. Giles Cathedral. This, along with St. Paul’s Cathedral in Minnesota, is the most amazing, beautiful church I have ever seen. The Thistle Chapel is simply amazing beyond description. We hit Holyroodhouse. This is the Estate at the bottom of the mile that was the home to the Royal Family, dating back to the days of Mary Queen Of Scots around 1500. The house is beautiful, but the highlight for my little photographer was the ruined Abbey behind the house.

On our way back up the hill, we took a sidetrip to an old burned Cemetery just off the mile. Some really cool headstones and crypts, but the place looked charred. We haven’t been able to figure out what happened here just yet. But it gave the place an interesting look!

Dinner that night was at the restaurant at the Witchery. Again, great experience. 5 star dining. Right before we left the room to go over there, I gave her a present she wasn’t expecting…an anniversary ring. Tanzanite and Diamond. I think she was happy. After dinner, we again went back to the room to enjoy the accommodations.

DAY SEVEN (Friday). STILL GOOD.

Today was a day with a lot to see. Yesterday, we had attempted to visit the big castle, but the lines to get in were huge, so we started our Friday with a visit. First in line. It was impressive, but not quite as much as we had led ourselves to believe. The view from up here is amazing, though.

We then headed out of the city. Again, driving in this town was tough…they don’t like to label roads very well. Once we got out of the city, we headed for Rosslyn Chapel. Anyone who has read or seen “DaVinci Code” will be familiar with this one. It is every bit as incredible as described in the book, but it was a bit of a disappointment for 2 reasons. One, thanks to that book, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country now (There were literally HUNDREDS of people in this tiny chapel today), and Two, due to decay, there is currently a huge scaffolding around the entire exterior of the building. It’s a beautiful church, but you can’t get a good look at it. I still recommend stopping there, however.

After Rosslyn, we headed south to see the four “Borders Abbeys”….Melrose, Jedburgh, Dryburgh, and Kelso. These are four ancient Abbeys that have, through the years, been bombed out by the British. They all have varying amounts of ruin remaining, and are some very beautiful sites for a photographer. Doing this took the rest of the day.

From here, the highlights of the trip ended. We now had to drive back to Glasgow. More of those not-so-fun roads, it took a lot longer than planned. Got lost again in Glasgow. (What is it with this country and poor signage in the cities?) Once we found the hotel, we were tired, so we grabbed a quick bite to eat, then it was off to bed.

DAY EIGHT (Saturday)…BAD DAY

Finding the airport from here was no problem. Returning the rental car was. We took it in and told them about the incident with the flat tire and license plate. They examined the car, and told me how much the damage was going to cost me. I asked why that wasn’t covered by the insurance that I bought. They told me that it was, but the damage exceeded the 960 that the insurance covered. For the record, that means they were claiming that I did over $2000.00 worth of damage to their car. BULLS#!T!!!!

We then had our fun little flight home. One hour in the first plane, 8 in the next. We were stuck in the very back row of the plane. Peggy felt sick most of the flight, but kept herself from throwing up. Once we got into Chicago, it was quick through customs, a cab to Roger & Lisa’s house, got the car and drove home.

Home. Yes, nice to be at home. Until you realize that while you were away, you were ROBBED. Someone broke in and stole some stuff…mostly money. I first noticed when I saw that my huge change jar was empty. Then noticed some other stuff. In addition to that, I discovered that the freezer door was part-way open. It was frozen over, and all the food was ruined. Peggy called her Mom, her health has taken a severe turn for the worse.

Wow! What a roller coaster of a trip.

Reading everything, it seems as if some of Scotland remains unchanged since the days of Macbeth! Hope you had a great time.

That said, I'm so sorry to hear about the unforseen travel expenses, house and Peggy's mom. Major Prayers and LI Phin Power to her.

Sometimes more than others,
we see who and what and where we are,
I'm just a one man band,
With my feet in the sand,
Tonight I just need my guitar

Glad you are home safe and sound. Sorry to hear about the poopy days...but it sounds like the 4 good days made up for it. Hopefully at some point you'll be able to laugh about it all...after you get everything straightened out, that is.

Grrrrrr, on the robbery. Maybe I should put on my ass kickin boots and go to WI to go varmit hunting.

I still hope to get to Scotland someday soon...I'll be sure to get the lowdown from you before I do! Can't wait to see the pics. :D
