Jerry Jeff don't take no requests unless you are a nice looking lady or the song in question moves him.phinhead wrote:Did anyone go to the Jerry Jeff Walker concert in Alexandria, VA.? If so...how was it? I've never seem him live. I'll be seeing him for the first time in Key West. I can't wait.

Jerry Jeff
We saw Jerry Jeff & Todd Snider @ BB Kings in NYC back in March. Great show by both. Jerry did not seem real pleased by the chatter & people yelling out requests. He even made a comment about it. I'd say a must see show nonetheless.

There's a photo on the back of a long-out-of-print Jerry Jeff Walker album that kind of sums it all up. In the picture, Jerry Jeff is outside an old roadhouse on a lonesome highway. It's night, and his collar is turned up against the chill breeze as he hunches over to light a cigarette. His guitar is slung around his back. It's hard to tell if he's entering or leaving the roadhouse, but either way you figure he's got many miles to go before he sleeps.
Somehow, one gets the idea that that is how Jerry Jeff has always pictured himself. Even when he was playing screaming cowboy rock 'n' roll to thousands of people, the solitary troubadour was always on the inside, looking out.
Jerry Jeff has lived—and is living again—the troubadour's life. Lots of musicians talk about the road; Jerry Jeff really is the kid who rode his thumb out of his hometown in upstate New York to such exotic destinations as Key West (where he introduced another young musician named Jimmy Buffett to the pleasures of island life)…He really did sing for pennies on New Orleans streetcorners, alongside Mr. Bojangles…He really did strap his guitar on the back of a motorcycle and go busking across Canada…And he really did sing in the smoky cafes and folk clubs of Greenwich Village, following in the footsteps of Bob Dylan and Ramblin' Jack Elliott.
And that all happened before he became a star. Most folks know that story—how Jerry Jeff moved to Austin, Texas in the early Seventies and reinvented himself as a Lone Star country-rocker. He became, along with Willie Nelson and Asleep At The Wheel, one of the arbiters of the internationally famous Austin musical community. Since then, he has celebrated the music of peers such as Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt, and served as a fountainhead and inspiration to younger musicians such as Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Jack Ingram, Todd Snider, and a moderately successful country tunesmith named Garth Brooks.
He's played for four or five presidents, toured in Lear Jets and bought second homes in New Orleans and Belize (the fruits, in part, of having penned an American pop standard, "Mr. Bojangles"). His band of musicians, known variously as the Lost Gonzo Band and the Gonzo Compadres, have been indispensable parts of the endless caravan.
But even with all that, Jerry Jeff still sees the world with a troubadour's eyes. His songs are the way he makes the world make sense, how he passes on stories of the people he meets, the way he feels on a given morning. He has come full circle, back to his solitary singer-songwriter roots. You might say he was heading this way all along.

Re: Jerry Jeff
I think you , me and LIPH was there. I was the only one to get Todd's autograph on his first CD. I waited for JJW but he was a no-show. I got his autograph and Djangos the year before. First and only time I was privileged enough to shake his hand. He's losing his patience with the NYC audience but is scheduled to be back at BB Kings in November.Tropic_Al wrote:We saw Jerry Jeff & Todd Snider @ BB Kings in NYC back in March. Great show by both. I was at both alexandria shows, and in charlotte. He wasn't feeling well in VA, and he got irritated with the requests. In Charlotte, he was obviously feeling better, and he tore it up!
All three were quality shows, but Charlotte was the best of them.

Re: Jerry Jeff
If my memory isn't completely shot, those 2 shows at BB King's back in March were about a week after his dad died. Maybe that's why he wasn't in the most festive mood. I was at the Friday show and he got p*** off at one guy who kept yelling for the same song all night.Goodman wrote:I think you , me and LIPH was there. I do believe his dad passed away a few weeks earlier. Jerry Jeff was doing a show in Va. ( I think ? ) that was rescheduled. His father's memorial service was going to be the Sunday right after the show in NYC in upstate NY on March 12. I'm sure he was preoccupied w/that. However, he was gracious enough for a quick handshake and an autograph nonetheless after his set. We will be at his Saturday show in NYC in November.

Saw him in Chalotte monday night, for the 1st time!! I've been a huge fan for years, our paths would never seem to come together, until monday night. I went by myself after work and had a blast. The highlight was getting my picture made with him after the show,I just happened to have my digital little Kodak with me that night. The picture turned out great!!
THESE DAYS I GET UP ABOUT THE TIME I USED TO GO TO BED!!!
I've seen Jerry Jeff many times. Always enjoy his shows...and sometimes the antics are a little scary
, but understood.
I love it when he says, "yeah, I remember my first beer too" when someone is acting up!!! I think Jimmy B uses that line too.
Here is a great fan site for Jerry Jeff.
