Blue State and Red State Parrots - Which way do you lean???
I've seen some seething political debates here. We all know Jimmy himself is a died in-the-wool, lifelong Democrat, but I'm curious. . .
How many of you out there would agree with Jimmy's political views and how many would smile, nod and vote the other way?

VOTE!!!!
No matter what, VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree to a point that everyone should vote... IF they've made themselves knowledgeable about the candiddates and issues.
However, in this era of close elections, if you're just picking names off a list and don't know anything about them.... stay home.
Maybe I'm a grumpitarian, too.

Although I vote every election, I can see why people in some states may not want to waste their time. For instance, I live in MA, a very very democratic state. The Republicans couldn't win this state if 80% of the dems didn't show. So going out and voting republican will do nothing for the outcome of who wins MA. Now if the elections was done by popular vote, it would be a different story.

the same could be said for anywhere... CO's idea of proportional representation basing their Electoral College votes on the percentage of the popular would make it a much greater portrait of the candidate's support. Of course, so would holding elections on Sat. or declaring the first Tues. after the first Mon. in Nov. a national holiday so participation would not be a choice between voting and working.Rum_Runner wrote:Although I vote every election, I can see why people in some states may not want to waste their time. add to that a requirement that all redistricting map efforts actually be reasonably balanced might help too

An uneducated vote is NOT better than no vote at all. Elected leaders should not be voted in on how polished they look, who has the best "sound bites" or who can sling the most mud. . .all of which tend to impress people who really don't want to take the time to find out what the issues that drive a particular candidate.
I will now step off my soapbox.
Though a vote for the minority party may not influence the end result, it is a recorded vote. It says that you cared enough to get out and express your preference, it tells the minority party that they do have some support, and it tells the majority party that there are other opinions out there they must answer to, and I think all of those things are important.Rum_Runner wrote:Although I vote every election, I can see why people in some states may not want to waste their time. While I tend to agree with that in general, some would take that to mean that voting along party lines isn't good, which I don't necessarily agree with. I like to think I pay attention to things, but there are minor positions where I don't have a clue, or don't have the patience to research, where I'll vote along party lines.

I feel that being accepted by, and running under the flag of, a certain party means that, for the most part, you know where they stand on major issues. Granted, that's not always true, like Giuliani and Bloomberg in NYC (while I like them both, they are NOT Republicans), but it can give you a snapshot of thier views.
That said, I notched a Republican vote (because right-wing, gun-toting, Teddy Roosevelt Bull Moose party wasn't a choice) for the poll, yet continue to fill my MP3 player with Springsteen, Henley, Buffett and others (no Dixie Chicks, however . . . OK, Goodbye Earl is on there as well) whose views probably would have me leaving the table at a dinner party.
