Ok, what's the story about Parrotheads and Cincinnati?

I've heard that the Parrothead "thing" (for lack of a better word) started in Cincinnati. I think Jimmy even alluded to this when I attended the concert there this year. But what's the story about this? I did a quick search but didn't find anything.

Timothy B Schmidt was an honorary bandmember for a cincy concert... he looked out at all the fans in grass skirts, crazy hats...and equated the scene to the Greatful Dead's fan called Deadheads.... IE ParrotHEADS.

So, it's only about the name. I was thinking it had more to do with people dressing up there first.

Well in a way it did.... people have tiki bars, parrots, palm trees, cheeseburgers and volcanos....on top of their heads!!!
I dont know the exact quote... but its was something like.... Hey look at your fans..they follow you around and live the life style you sing about... just like the Deadheads do with the Greatful Dead.... but they look more like ParrotHeads.
And of course Jimmy coined the ever popular.....
Our fans are Deadheads with a credit card.

I'm not sure that I would call Timothy B. Schmidt an honorary band member, he was a full blown Coral Reefer for several years. The way the story goes is
"Once, when performing at Timberwolf Ampitheatre at Kings Island in Ohio, Jimmy commented on all those crazy folks in the crowd from the Cincinnati area wearing Hawaiian shirts and parrot hats and who keep coming back to every show. "Just like DeadHeads," Jimmy commented. Coral-Reefer Timothy B. Schmidt (who also played Bass for the Eagles between stints with the Coral-Reefer Band) replied, "yea, ParrotHeads!"

I was at that show....it was my third year. Back then, we didn't dress up quite as much, but we supposedly were the first ones to go overboard with the Hawaiian shirts and stuff. There were still very few who dressed up any more than Hawaiian shirts and leis, some grass skirts. A few got creative with shark stuff. Every year more and more people got more outrageous. Keep in mind, that this was mostly at the Kings Island show. Nobody else really started for a few years after that. Those Kings Island shows were the BEST. I boycotted the first year at Riverbend (I still hate that place). Kings Island was a lot more fun, amusement park, buckets of beer (to which James Taylor aluded to in one of his songs), beer bongs, and 5 dollar admission if you had a season pass to the park (which was about 20 bucks).

As I have said many times, Cincy likes to think this thing just came up at their concert. What they fail to say is that the subject came up at a Pittsburgh show, thats where Jimmy and Schmitt first discussed that there should be a name for his crazy fans dressing up...then in Cincy they got a name....I used to know the source of this sotry but it escapes me now....
It is NOT because Cincy was some sort of polar star on the tour...it just happened there....
