FTP Service/Set-up

Post by land_shark3 »

Are there any free FTP sites out there that you would recommend? I'm trying to find a site to load some business movies and just send customers there instead of mailing out CDs.

I would like to have them in one file like a FTP location, but if worse comes to worse, I could use a simple file sharing program to send individual files.

Actually there are several. You have to decide your needs and what you like or want. If you want a cracked program I know of reputable site you can find one....... Let me know. PM me.

Here is one:
http://www.coreftp.com/

There are others. I did a simple search on www.dogpile.com and found quite a few.

Here is the link for the search results:

Maybe I'm not technologically advanced enough to know what kind of trouble I'm getting myself into.

Here is the situation:
We have a lot of product videos that we like to show customers.
It would be nice to simply send them a link where they can download the videos as opposed to mailing them out.
Most of the videos are between 80Mb and 400Mb so e-mail is out of the question.

Now, what's my solution?

Not sure if this will solve your problem but it is an idea ...........there are various web hosting sites that you can upload your video to and then the person goes to the site and can downlaod from there.

Does this sound viable and acceptable to you and for your clients? Note some sites may have a limit on what you upload for FREE and charge for over certain limit.
For example: http://rapidshare.de/ allows free hosting but allows a certain FREE ammount per download and then a person has to wait for an hour or so to download anything else.

There are other free hosts out there.....

I am not a techie. I will help and answer you as best that I can, and I know that there are some techies here that can answer you far better than I can....I am just trying to help and give you some ideas.....

Let me know if any are of any use to you........No matter what you do you are going to have to find a server to host them...If your company does it or you have to find somewlse to host it.

Do the clients reciecing the videos all have a highspeed connection? Remember the weakest link of the chain applies to this as well! You can only process or send so much information through a a link..... Is their link as good and strong as yours?

( Hopefully so) You may have to split the files into smaller segments may be a consideration.... there are numerous free video splitters and joiners that can do that for you that you might wantto consider using on the video files..... 100MB let alone 400MB is a very large download for most anyone.........( 400 MB is very close to half of 1G! Okies I admit 500MB is one half of a Gig but I did say close!)

We have an internal server, VPN, and our own website. However, the person who handles uploading things to the website is a real... well let's just say she doesn't want to do any more work than she has to and even that is pushing it.

Our IT support is almost as bad. He told me it was impossible to use Outlook. Well, guess which mail client I'm on. Not to mention when our server went down, he couldn't fix it for a week because he forgot to order the parts.

I guess what I need to know is where can I host videos and have them all in the same location so a customer can pick and choose? If I have to pay, then I can try to get the company to approve it.

Ok from what little I understand of this.your company SHOULD be able to host it.All you have to do is upload it onto the server. >>>NOTE<<< I am not a techie. HOWEVER I don't see why they cannot or should not. It will eat up some bandwith......but the potential clients that buy the product(s) should cover the costs I would tend to think.

Yeah email is definitely out of the question unless you just send them the link to where they can download the video. A lot of wmail is set in size on what they hold and/of can recieve, ie maybe only a 5 or 10MB size file.

FTP might be a better way to go IF the reciever has a way to revieve it.
One thing I am now thinking of (* DUH BRAINFART) is for your company to host the videos on their server and have links where a customer or person can clik the link and then "SAVE AS" and save it to thier computer.

Pretty si,ple actually..... You may want to consider making an "overview" of say around 1MB or maybe 5MB-10MB ( NOTE SIZE IS ONLY A SUGGESTION) Preview of each video and consider winrar or other type .zip files.

At least this way the person has a chance to preview the data they are recieving or going to get.

Also you may want to consider the format the video file is in....Do you need such high quality of video and audio or can it be compressed into another format and no one would really notice the difference. For example compressing a picture on your computer no one really notices any difference until they enlarge it and print it.

I have no idea about what video and audio compressions work the best or would suit your needs, but there are numerous different formats out there...such as people are pretty familiar with MP3 for audio compression.

I am sure there are people here probably at work that could answer you much better than I am trying to...I know your IT and techies could if they were willing.....At least THEY SHOULD know or they should be sent to look for employment elsewhere.........

Just a thought .... and it may or may not be viable for you operation.

Google Video: http://video.google.com/support

It's still in beta but it's free and there doesn't appear to be any limits on size or number of files.

The videos are hosted on our server, but you have to log on to the VPN and have access.

A lot of thiese suggestions look very promising though!

The best thing I think would be to have your company host the videos on a web page for your customer to download. You have pay attention to the format because if you used wmv. (the windows format) your customers that use mac will not be able to recieve it

We have some baby movies on the website, like 3Mb. But they are so slow and the customer cannot download them.

Sounds like your servers are way to slow or else the line/connection itself is way too slow...or else the person/company recieving the file is on dial up.

Another possible simple solution that MIGHT be considered, is to burn them to disc that could be snail mailed to the person/company upon request.

There is no way, you are gonna have anyone get a 400MB file through there, in any reasonable amnount of time, if they can't get a 3MB one.

Sy or Rick or PirateJohn or someone else MIGHT be able to tell you something more and help you out better than I can.

Oh no, they can't download them because they are in flash. Stupid Macromedia!

Currently we do mail them, but it is just such a hassle to wait for them to receive the disc or we pay around $15 or so to over night them only for them to ask for a different video or machine.

Well they can get Flash for free download/ Are they trying to watch the videos "streaming" or d/l them and watch them after saving them to their computer? There is a way to save Flash videos to the computer. I think Adobe makes such a program. Maybe it is someone else. ( Just for your info you can always go to your cache and find the video in there and THEN save it to your computer, so that is a way around "the system" but youhave to wtch it first, so that is not much help to you unfortunately, :( )

If they don't have the program to view it,with it is not your fault, and not much you can do about it. They need to d/l and install the Flash Player available for free online.

You could post that Flash is needed to view the video and have that posted on the site, with a link to get it for free. Surely your "webheads" could handle that.

You can do a search on www.dogpile.com or else google it, find the link, and do half the work for them

Hope this helps.

They have no problem watching the clip, as long as they are connected to the Internet.

However, when I'm trying to sell a $400,000 machine, I would like them to be able to see more than a few seconds and also to open the video at anytime.

If our IT guy ever shows up, I'll see what he can do.

Yeah I hear you, Bro.
Something I am not understanding, is how they can see a few seconds but not the rest of the video.

Here is a search I did for you a few mins ago. You can probably find what is needed there, or at least beable to talk with the IT guy about some of the proggies (programs).

http://www.dogpile.com/info.dogpl/searc ... 2349/right

Something else you can consider ( IF you haven't done this already) is having two d/l options one for dial up and one for high-speed connections.
Like RM and other sites do.
(Maybe if you bribed the IT guy with a 6 pack or a pizza or something would help? Burn him a JB cd? Couldn't hurt and you might make a new friend and get stuff done faster? Just a thought....)

Hope it is some use.
Best of luck!

Sorry for the confusion...

The video on-line is only a 10-15 seconds because of the size. The videos we host on our server are anywhere from 3 minutes to 20 minutes.
