Boston in the Summer!

Post by lesphoto »

Boston in the summer...

Now that MID and I are planning an unplanned trip to Boston, looks like we'll have one day free to sightsee...Friday.

Any suggestions? Something other than the Cheers bar? I'm looking for something photographic..MID loves to shop..

We both like anything to do with the water. Definately want to check out the tall ships in the harbour.

Thanks!!

The Freedom Trail (it ends with the ships, but its a walking tour)
Fanueil Hall
Sam Adams Brewery
Fenway Park (Friday night the Sox play the Indians)
Cheers

will you have a car???? i could give you suggestions but they'd be all over the place. do you just want to stay/do just" in boston" or not. maybe take a harbor tour. that way you'll be on the water but also taking in the sites. the duck tours are very very popular. i believe that you can't book them too far in advance. i believe it may be 10 -7days prior. ck their site http://bostonducktours.com/

definitely have something to eat in the north end... must visit mike's pastry or modern pastry, both on hanover street. boston also has trolley tours like in key west. the freedom trail is excellent but with megan.. she might not feel like walking a whole lot.
i don't know about the tall ships. will they be in town??

pm me and i can give you some more info. i'd be glad to help. :)

I've done the duck tour in other cities and loved them. I've never booked them ahead. Did the trolley tour in Boston and it was good, lotsa information. Did a harbour tour also. OK, not great (IMHO). there is lots to do near Fanueil (sp) Hall and the North End section is not too far from there.

Let's see..... you must go to Fanueil Hall. (The hall not Quincy Market which surrounds it unless you want to go shopping). Old Ironside (based in Charlestown). If you want to stop over for Italian food, walk along Hanover Street in the North End. Old North Church is not too far around there. There is the New England Aquarium and the Museum of Science (but will take some time to go through).

Also, if you just want to take a quick "tour bus" type of sight seeing you have the Old Town Trolly and the Duck Tours too.
If you want an experience, go to a Jimmy Buffett concert.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Just echoing what everyone else has said...............but, are you looking to go somewhere other than Boston? Do you know yet whether you will be staying in Boston, or closer to GreatWoods? Have you ever toured Boston before?

There are plenty of photo ops and shopping in Boston.

If you want to leave the Boston area and head North about 30 min. to an hour you could do the North Shore for the day. Historic Salem, Gloucester, Rockport, I could go on

If you want South of Boston I'd recommend The Cape, but then again traffic on the Cape on a Friday...........I'm not so sure about, maybe those closer to the Cape can give their input on that.

If you want to go to the beach Les, I would suggest going to the beaches of New Hampshire. Avoid Hampton Beach though, it is filthy and WAY too crowded. Go to Rye (I used to go to Wallis {could be Weiss} Sands Beach, if you are going up Route 1A North it will be on your right).

Wallis Sands State Park Nice Beach for spending the day at the Beach

Hampton & Salisbury are must sees.........just to see them if you're up that far North may as well just swing thru to see what it's all about!!!!!!!!

Maybe Les, if you could tell us what you enjoy photographing we could better help you. If you're on a search for a particular subject just let us know..........we'll send you in the right direction.

If you are referring to the Friday between Buffett shows then they are playing Baltimore not Cleveland.

Head to Faneuil Hall, plenty to see and do there. It is a 2 min walk to the water and the North end where you can take plenty of pictures.

Didn't think of that but yes, anyone coming up to Boston the weekend of the Buffett shows, it is Baltimore.

Photographically speaking, I'll shoot anything. I'm looking for unique locations and culture. People, places, architecture. Something I won't see somewhere else.

I'm an early morning kind of guy. Get up and out before everyone else and get shots of things no one else gets a chance to see. What is Faneuil Hall? I've heard many suggestions to go there, but what will we see?

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm not one to waste an opportunity. We've just freed up our Sunday Morning, so I may also get to go out then too!

Fanueil Hall is the main building where a lot of Independence/Constitution ratification debates happened.

If you want an interesting building to shoot, then go to the Statehouse. It is the golden domed building near the Park Street T Station.

Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

If your interested in taking some great shots get up early and head on over to the Public Gardens, early in the morning on a nice day it's really a great place to take photos. For people watching there are 2 great spots around Boston. 1. North End (old school Italians yelling at eachother on the street all day long... can't beat it) 2. Harvard Square (you can take pictures of the smartest kids in the country sitting next to a punk skater collecting pennies in a tuna fish can... great photo opportunity there. PM with any questions.

Photo ops, and if you have a means of conveyance. Castle Island is South Boston. The castle, Ft. Independence is a star shaped fort that overlooks the approaches, both air and sea, into Boston. If you want to go to another one, not to common, jump on one of the harbor tour boats to George's Island. It is another for the guarded to outer channels and was used as a prison for confederate soldiers in the Civil War. Plus the views of Boston from the water are better than any you can get on land.

I will second the Mikes Pasrty suggestion, as well as the small restaurants in the North End.

Don't go to Mike Pastries. They pre-fill all their canolies. The locals go to Modern Pastry right down the street, they are filled to order. Modern also carries Baci (Italian chocolate) which is fantastic.
