the street musician and the cops
This is just a little (more than semi-) true story about the pervasiveness of Margaritaville. I was on lunch break from jury duty at the courthouse in Van Nuys, CA (San Fernando Valley). I was walking around outside and heard some music. It turned out to be a kind of scruffy, long-haired guy with a guitar playing for tips. I couldn't hear the song yet. Figured it was something edgy. As I got closer I realized that he was playing Margaritaville. I had to chuckle at my mistaken expectation. He was in the chorus. "Some people claim that there's a woman to blame..." Then he just stopped - right in the middle - and stood up as if to pack up and move on. Then I saw why. Two cops were approaching on the sidewalk. As they passed him, one of them said, "It's nobody's fault" and they walked on.
