Do you waste your time
finishing a book if it just isn't clicking?
I"m reading a mystery by a major author who apparently has tons of books under her belt and it's just not clicking. In days passed I always finished a book i started. It would bother me to quit. This just might be the second book recently that I don't finish. I just don't seem to have the patience I used to.

Unfortunately, I have another way to waste my time although I've recently managed to cut back quite a bit.

I thought you were talking about the book you're writing. I started thinking, "Wow, how many books has she written!OceanCityGirl wrote:finishing a book if it just isn't clicking?

No, if I'm not into a book, I don't finish it. I used to when I was in a book group, so I discuss it appropriately and tell people how disappointed I was in it, but now, time is too precious!

I wouldn't go that far - I'd just swallow faster so I could more quickly get to a good beer.scubamyk wrote:I will put away a book if it doesn't flow, I will pour a bad beer down the drain and I will throw away a good cigar if it is plugged.
I don't like to waste my time fixing things or hoping they get better.

It really depends. I've put down books only to go back and start again and really enjoy them. (The most recent was P. Cornwall's 'Blowfly'. It was a very slow start...great book by the end of it.)OceanCityGirl wrote:finishing a book if it just isn't clicking?

Yeah, I've tried to read 'Bone Key' several times....I just gave up. All the trappings of a good book....and is sucked.ToplessRideFL wrote:Ditto..... and sometimes that may be several months or years.... But if I pick it up the 2nd time and its a dud... It's by Margaret Truman, daughter of the late prez
Murder in Havana., and it's like her 15th book. I try to like it but there's just nothing in the characters that interests me. Like I said, I rarely never finish a book. It's usually a sign that i'm under too much stress or some such thing. I'm a bit obsessive/compulsive and can obsess over things unfiinished.
I went to the library and go tthree books.
This one, the latest Sue Grafton and Shadow Divers about the recovery of a german uboat off jersey shore. I pick the book I'll like the least to read first and save the best for last.

I start skimming as I did with that pathetic excuse for a book - Jimmy Buffett, Man from Margaritaville by Steven Erg (or some name like that)
I have a thing about finishing books.

Sounds like you just need to set it down and have a go at it later. Have you ever read the JD Robb mysteries? Might be something new you can get into since you seem to like the genre.

I'll usually give the book the benefit of the doubt, and try to get at least halfway before jumping ship...
A lot of books I've read just start out slow, then I have a hard time putting them down as I approach the end...
Or maybe put it down and come back to it later... I had to do this with A Pirate Looks at Fifty, I just couldn't get into it the first time I tried reading it.
