charter boat fishing advice

Post by kitty »

I want to take my 12 year old son out on a fishing charter. Does anyone have any suggestions for boats in the CT. or Long Island area?

yeah, last time we did it...we got the patch...I grew up on boats and never got sick...but who wants to take a chance. We did one of those big boats with like 50 people out of Long Island....this time I am thinking smaller and more personal service. I know it is pricey...some of the rates I've seen are $900 for a full day! :o

Out here in California some of the fishing shops have deals with some of the skippers that run charters. Might try a few phone calls.

If you decide to go fishing while you're in Hatteras, let me know. I have a connection.

Dad always charters- if you fill the boat (usually 6 people), the cost per person is usually the same as or close to a "cattlemaran" for the same amount of time (but they pretty much only go to Hawaii now, so I have no idea how that compares to the NE).

I was on a fishing charter off Long Island back in the 70s and had a great time with this guy. Are you and your son looking for "big fish"? He's a crusty old SOB but I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Dang!
We just got back from Hatteras and spent a half day on a headboat out of Oregon Inlet. The weather looked beautiful, but it really stunk for catching fish -- it was hot and windy. (And we were on the afternoon trip, so it was hot from the start.)

I like the idea of a half-day trip with kids. A full 8-10 hours on a boat with a preteen might make you question your sanity. Even for myself I would go for a half-day trip again, but I would try for the morning when it's not so hot.

I really need to remember this. We might make a fall trip this year if the hurricane season cooperates.
