Couric was then allowed into the cockpit and convinced the pilot to delay the flight and reopen the door for her producer, Nicola Hewitt.
I work on the other side of that door, and without going into all of the FAA rules and airline security procedures regarding the opening of that door, the simple question to ask is:

Would any of us have been able to do the same thing and get away with it?

The simple answer is NO.

So Ms. Couric used the aura of her fame and her persuasive personality to get something that none of us could hope for (barring a medical emergency). If we all tried that, airline travel would be even more chaotic than it already is (it's not THAT bad is it? :) ).

Having said that, airlines are not immune to bad press and practice PR on a daily basis. Perhaps Delta felt it was worth the inconvenience to hold the flight for Couric's colleague, considering that it wouldn't make for a late arrival at destination.

Black added that when Couric made her request, the pilot determined that favorable tailwinds would not delay the hourlong flight - and even with the brief delay taking off, the flight arrived at La Guardia 10 minutes ahead of schedule.
Can I take a little closer look at this? Are they actually telling us a flight not got in on time, but arrived ahead of schedule at LaGuardia? :o :o :o :o

I've always said that in "The Weather is Here," the reason he was on his third drink before the wheels of the plane left the ground was because he was flying out of LaGuardia. :P

Aren't cell phones supposed to be turned off when the flight attendants close the door?

depends on the airline. Most say, "cell phones must be turned off when the cabin door is closed." Those, being transmitters, it's understandable. The portable electronic devices like mp3 players, are just arbitrary as they don't transmit or interfere with cabin/cockpit-tower comm

Talking to the flight attendants to help get a late person on board, no problem. Expecting the cockpit door to be opened to talk to the pilot...not appropriate these days...Katie over-stepped there and the crew made a poor choice to allow it.
