Caribbean Soul Man wrote:for some great sippin' rum, go with Mt. Gay on the rocks. Mt. Gay Eclipse is easy to find but if you can get the white label Mt. Gay "Barbados Sugar Cane Rum," get two bottles!

Just mix it with ice.
10 Cane is also excellent and has a very clean and unique flavor but a bit expensive if you can find it.
Dole has a pineapple / mango juice that mixes well with any rum and I've experimented lately with the traditional Pain Killer recipe (mentioned already in this threat) only I added a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream and used the pineapple / mango juice instead of OJ. Add the fresh nutmeg and you have what I call a "Painful Mango Killer." Remember - without Pusser's, it's just not a Pain Killer of any kind.
Trust me,
they go down dangerously smooth.
most rum drinks with fruit juice do..

Mt. Gay Eclipse on the rocks is fine, but it's better as a mixer. The Sugar Cane Brandy is potent... the best is the Mt. Gay Extra Old. (Once made a bartender in Barbados practically cry by mixing Extra Old with Diet Coke!) Foursquare Spiced Rum is also excellent, but hard to find in the states.
We judge restaurants by whether their bars have Mt. Gay, Eclipse or extra old.
For those of you in Orange CountyCA, Hi Time liquors, hidden on Ogle Street just off 17th (turn right on 17th heading east on Newport Blvd., then right again one block to Ogle) has Mt. Gay Extra Old, and also has the Eclipse in the larger 1/2 gallon jugs as is it sold down island, and they also have Falernum. Also have an excellent selection of single malts.
Most people here seem to buy their liquor at the supermarkets, although because of the predominance of wine in CA, must admit most supermarkets of the better sort have large wine and spirits departments... our local supermarket even has Friday night wine tastings with food, with the money paid going to a charity, said they were the only supermarket in CA licensed to have these events. But makes it hard to find items that don't "move" off the shelves. A sailor told us about Hi-Time.
There seems to be a lot of tequila about down here, prob'ly due to the border being a couple hours away. We've toured the Guadalupe wine country in northern Baja and know a little bit about Mexican wines as a result, but we know nothing about tequila!! Have any recommendations?

Here is a simple one: (No soda, nothing to mix)
Try Bacardi 8 on the rocks. You will NEVER want to drink another makers rum again!

Pineapple juice, cranberry juice and rum........yummy

Sorry, I would have agreed with you a few years ago, but now it's Appleton Estate Extra (12 year old) for me.

Appleton also has a 21 year old, but I haven't tried that yet. I do like the Cruzan (I have a bottle in the cupboard), but I'm not sold on the Ron Barrilitos.

By not sold you mean not wanting to try? Trust me it's very good. I didn't know Appleton had a 21yr I just got into the Appleton at all. For years I didn't drink much rum. We went to Puerto Rico 2004 I got hooked.

No, I brought a bottle back from Puerto Rico about 4 years ago and wasn't too impressed. Don't know what it was about it, but it just didn't work for me. I wasn't a big Appleton fan until a couple of years ago, but once I tried the Extra (12 year old) I've really like it.

I've liked rum for about 30 years and one of my all-time favourites was Bacardi 1873, but I don't know if you can get it in the States.
