Jake's performance at Borders 8-6-06

. .several of us ( me, tikiB, Quiet and Shy and ejr ) went to the performance Jake held at Borders, downtown Chicago on Sunday afternoon . .

. . it was truly one the highlights of the weekend . . and I'll just share from my perspective. . .

. . to say he is amazing does not give him justice . .he is one of the most humble, and friendliest young men I have ever met . . and notice I haven't even addressed his talent . .

. .to sit 5 feet in front of him, and watch him work his magic, was something I will never forget . . watching his fingers softly dance across the strings and make the most incredible sounds, I felt myself barely breathing just watching him play . .

. . he was chatting with the crowd before the show . . and answered everyone's questions, and had a look of disbelief when someone mentioned how much they enjoyed "such and such " or when you played with " so and so " . .he was quite " taken " with the realization of his " new found fame " . . .and also, very humble . .

. .he mentioned how proud and honored he was to be a part of Jimmy's show . . and how supportive they all were. . and how much fun it was to be a part of it all . .

. .he then shared a story of being " star struck " by Bill Payne . .and told a story of sitting in his room . .just talking . .about music . . and life. . with a guy that was as " big " to him , as it would be one of us, sitting and talking with Jimmy . .

. . again, he played several songs from his Dragon CD . . wow . .the song Third Stream was unbelievable . . . and a couple from his new CD due out in Sept . .

. .after the show he signed CD's, etc . .and posed for pics. . the Borders' hostess would go thru the line preparing a Stick-On with the message you wanted on your item . . I had the Dragon CD and asked it be made out to " The Balcony Girls " . . when it became my turn . .I handed it to him . . and he literally lit up and said " was that YOU I saw at the show last night . . ? ?. . you all were having a good time up there . . ! ! " . . then we all started chatting and telling him all about his " following " at BN, alone. .

. .again. . he was so genuinely humble and grateful . .

. .an amazing afternoon . . and ps. . he signed my CD " to the WILD Balcony Girls ! ! " " . . and said he loved my accent . .

:D :D :D :D

This mini-performance, up close and personal, was absolutely amazing! The emotion and expression in his playing - to say he gets into it would be an understatement! I especially enjoyed "Me and Shirley T"... made me feel like a kid again! Very humble indeed, and so very genuine and friendly. Definitely the perfect way to cap off a perfect weekend!

I cannot wait for the new cd to be released!

. .the story he told about that was too cute . . he mentioned how overwhelmed he gets looking at the size of the crowd . . Saturday, he had the set list and was prepared for his part . . Tampico Trauma, etc. . . then Jimmy came up to him about " 10 minutes " before the show with . . " think it would be good to repeat the SSA today, since it is Chicago . . "

. .Jake said he did a big :o . .and, after sizing up the crowd . . he paused. . " just trying to remember that first note . . " . . :o

. . again. . . so cool, calm and collected. . .it's a pleasure to just sit and listen to him. . .

I am just green with envy, but happy that you got to see him 'up close and personal' like that, BG.

Wow!

BG, thanks so much for posting...what a wonderful experience we had! I loved Jake's stories almost as much as his playing...and watching him play "Dragon"...absolutely incredible!!

Anyway, I didn't want to bug him too much with pictures, but I did take a couple...I couldn't resist...and then there's the Jake and BG pic, too. :D

What a wonderful experience that was...

Great pics!!!

MID, MacPhin, Tagalong, and I had the same experience at Jimmy D's in Cambridge before the GW show last week.

Jake is a unique experience. I'd love to think he's destined to become a superstar, but I think there aren't enough intelligent people here in the US to see that. So he'll be our private star and we'll be very lucky to enjoy his humility and talent for many years.

Here's a pic of him w/ MID, SGH and Fish in Cambridge

Jake is something else. Very talented & gracious. When we tell our friends we went to see a ukelele player, they think we're nuts. We saw him at the Borders in Kingston MA, 08.11.06. He only played about 1/2 hour but it was captivating. We wish we could've gone to Johnny D's but the show was little late for us. Just drove up from Jersey & wanted to get an early start the next day @ Great Woods. Too bad he's going to be in Japan when JB is at the Garden. Would like to see him play longer. Definately picking up his new cd..

Jake is simply awesome, as all of his "Dragon" CD is. I can't wait for his solo album to come out! :D
