Is your work email out of control??

My boss uses email like you would an instant message program... and it DRIVES ME NUTS not to mention clutters my InBox! If you don't respond instantly...she sends another email.
I understand that there is a lot of autonomy in my job. My division is a tiny part of a large company. And the 8 of us are scattered from coast to coast. While I share an office space with other divisions... MY boss is in Cincinatti. So I understand a little bit.... but for heaven's sake... if you want to have a conversation...call me.
Thanks for allowing me to get that off my chest......

Many times we use e-mail instead of calling so that everything is documented.
Employee: You never told me to do that.

Boss: Check your e-mail from 8/9/06 at 2:41pm; or I'll print you out a copy.

Yep. It's a good audit trail for a lot of things.
I'm so busy running around the building, I'm rarely at my desk for more than a few minutes at a time.
You tell me something over the phone, or in person, I'm likely to forget it 5 minutes later.
Not only do I have my OWN email, but am part of several group distribution lists, so I get at least 100 a day.

My boss uses email a lot for the reason J mentioned, to document everything. I worked for my previous boss for about 3 years and I never got an email, not one, from him. But I'd get to the office in the morning and I'd have voicemail from 3:00AM.

One of the managers I support sends constant e-mails, but I prefer that to his constantly dropping by my desk to ask about projects.
At least with e-mail, I can finish what I'm doing before responding!

Everyone at work except me gets emails.
I don't have an email address and people refuse to send me things at home

I have a client who is like that. She totally uses email like IM. If I'm not right there to read it right away, it's completely incoherent when I do. She also panics at the drop of a hat.

A little over a year ago, our company switched solely to an internal IM application and records all IM conversations.
I can't IM to anyone outside the company unless I get a special waiver. Every month I have to acknowledge all of my IM conversations (most of them are with hubby since we work for the same, very large, company). We also have to indicate if any of our IMs have to be retained for a number of legal reasons.

We use a small internal version of IM called "Snapmail".
It's a fairly cheap program. We use it to send work schedules and short messages. Works good and doesn't involve AOL or yahoo.

Other than the "Impress your lover" emails, no, my work email's not bad at all, I get maybe 3 or 4 work related emails a week.

Sigh, as we advance in technology, we don't educate people how to use it. Email isn't meant for that kind of immediate conversation. If someone wants that, they should pick up the phone or use im. Does she send you emails where the subject line should really be the body of the email? That's my all time pet peeve.
