Never counted as one of the best vocalists in the music industry, Jimmy has managed to base his career more on his stories, his personality and (of course) his songs.

However...

I think he sounds REALLY GOOD these days. Watching videos of older concerts compared to his concerts these days, I think his tone and sound and pitch are improving and becoming fuller and richer with age. It's amazing.

On Coast of Carolina, he sounds strong and resonant. And his duet with Nancy Griffith shows his ability to handle himself in the higher, softer ranges. And his pitch (for the most part) is more often than not, spot on. That's way unlike his earlier works. It's nice to witness that. I wonder if he feels stronger and better than he used to.

I swear... as long as he keeps putting stuff out, I'll keep buying and listening.
He's got a great mid to low range tone, but at times I think he likes to stretch it a bit.
Personally I think he sounds his best when it's just him and his guitar.

...especially with ballads and softer tunes. When he has to project to sing "over" the full band, he can't hit the lower notes with authority, so that's where the "shouting" comes in...or once in a while he'll take low notes up a 3rd or 5th (e.g. FSOTW).

Unlike many other singers who seem to lose their high range (Billy Joel, Elton John, etc.), I can't recall songs where he's had to adjust down. On LTC many complained he stretched too hard on "Scarlet Begonias," but I've always thought he hits those notes just fine.

On overall vocal quality, he's sounding as good as ever these days. :D

I love, love, love the way Jimmy's voice has aged. Like most people who IMHO can really sing (i.e., James Taylor, Don Henley), his voice has become much more full-bodied as it's mellowed. When I first listened to MMIM's new vesion of HWTP I actually shed a tear or two :) ... and got the chills.

That said, I do go back and listen to those early albums every now and then. Hearing ITS (one of my favorite songs) in that tentative voice, I can believe the "quiet and shy" claim!

And, like all of us, I'm thrilled he's still singing ... and hoping for another few years of the summer tour so my keets will be "old enough" to tag along.

I TOTALLY agree with you on that. CILCIA is one of my favorite Buffett songs, but now the yelling has turned me off to it. The Manassass show he doesn't yell as much so I enjoy it alot more than say last year where it seems every word was yelled. Nonetheless, I agree he sounds great!!

PHINS UP!!!

I like the Live In Hawaii CDs because the crowd
is so mellow, Jimmy doesn't have to scream out
the words to the songs. I appreciate the way the
songs sound because Jimmy doesn't have to
stretch his range to be heard. It seems like a more
intimate concert than the mainland shows.
