pay Columbia Records back?
We know he’s paid for the peanut butter and sardines. And, he’s never been shy about admitting to some of his past “indiscretions” in life.... Jimmy’s told the story several times of having joined the Columbia Records Club as a music-loving kid and using other addresses to get the records without ever having paid for them. So I was wondering whether anyone knows more about this bit of Buffett history....
What got me thinking on this was the recent “theft” Jimmy experienced via the live recordings of “Bama Breeze” and (video) “Here We Are” that ended up posted on the internet (with, for a short while, links from BN). Obviously the tables have turned and now he’s the wealthy guy who “can afford it” (as I’m sure he reasoned re. Columbia Records way back when).
For the record, I’m a pretty strong believer in intellectual property rights…as well as the principle that just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should. (I’d make a lousy Puritan; I just tend to think a lot about how things effect other people....)

I must not be a true fan, I never heard this story before.
Or if I did, I don't remember.

The 'Bama Breeze recording I heard was recorded from a Radio Margaritaville broadcast. Was there an earlier illicit recording floating around as well?

I always think of the words to Semi-True Stories.
http://www.buffettnews.com/song200.html
It's a semi-true story
Believe it or not
I made up a few things
And there's some I forgot.
But the life and the tellin'
Are both real to me
And they all run together and turn out to be
A semi-true story.
Interesting post Q&S.

OLD guy....
Courtesy of conched (from recent "old Coconut Telegraphs" thread):
This is from The Cocotel Volume 6, NO. 5 Christmas 1990, but was written before "Live By The Bay."
The following interview took place in Coconut Grove prior to the filming of the "Live By The Bay" video. The video was recorded at Miami Marine Stadium, and relevant segments of the interview were edited into the concert video. This proved to be a very effective means of showcasing a live Buffett performance, while at the same time allowing Jimmy to detail "how the whole thing got started." Those familiar with "Live By The Bay" may recognize bits and pieces of the interview, however, the majority ended up in The COCONUT TELEGRAPH.
I always loved music, all the way to joining the Columbia Record Club and sending the records to the wrong address so I wouldn't have to pay for them. I ordered every Kingston Trio album through the club and never paid for them. I always loved listening to music from New Orleans radio stations. At this time it was the middle of the folk era, and there were many clubs up and down the Mississippi Gulf coast.

me-thinks that was a tongue-in-cheek comment.

No, I think he actually did!
Read it on this site somewhere/sometime... Jimmy was on the bus and went past the old mini-mart sometime late at night or early in the morning - store was closed. He stopped the bus, slipped $300 under the door and went on his merry way.
Could be fiction, but sounds more like fictional fact to me.

The minimart story was in a recent Coconut telegraph. And, while playing "Peanut Butter Conspiracy" this year he's remarked several times that yes, he did pay them back....

When did Jimmy say he payed the mini mart back?? I've always wondered that every time I listen to Peanut Butter Conspiracy. "We all swore if we ever got rich...we would pay the mini mart back!" I'd say he can pay for some PB and sardines!!
