We didn't need it either, but we would hang around during the summer to get a small piece of ice to s*** on.

And boy, those ice cube trays could be difficult to open!

I didn't wait for the ice cream truck but I used to chase down the Good Humor man and then when I was in Tucson we would hunt down the Egees Italian Ice trucks.

When I flew home on leave from Japan in 1973, I changed planes in Kansas City. I took an OZARK AIRLINES flight from Kansas City to Cedar Rapids, with a stopover in OTTUMWA!
I remember the terminal building in Ottumwa was about as big as my tool shed, and that plane I was on would probably fit IN the tool shed.
Then, in 1978, just before I moved to Hawaii, I flew home from Tokyo thru Minneapolis. I caught an Ozark flight out of Minneapolis to Cedar Rapids, with stopovers in Rochester AND Waterloo.
JEEZ, LOUISE!
The flight from Minneapolis to Rochester was 15 minutes, from Rochester to Waterloo 20 minutes, and from Waterloo to Cedar Rapids 15 minutes.

Also,
My father taught me how to drive in our old Rambler station wagon, then he bought a Mercury Monterrey for him & Mom, and traded the wagon in on a Rambler sedan for my brother & me. :D

Grandma always called it the "ice box" and it took forever for her to give up her wringer washing machine. I remember the older neighbors across the street still had an ice box when I was a little kid...and watching the ice truck come every few days.... And, the milkman I remember, too.

What precious memories of Grandma’s house! Always and ice box, not a couch but a davenport, a footstool was a footstool and not an armoire, everyone knew where the cookie jar was, and it was NEVER empty. Grandma and Grandpa canned a lot of their foods, so jellies and jams and canned fruit accompanied most meals. Lord only knows why mincemeat was ever invented! :o :o I remember the “bread bowl” as a kid that was always on the table. If you were still hungry after dinner, you asked for the bread bowl and made yourself a PB&J sandwich and had another glass of milk. When Grandma passed I asked for the “bread bowl….” Ummmmmmm….. it was actually an ice bucket from the bar but they didn’t drink. Yes, those who lived through the Great Depression passed on a the important things regarding life’s treasures to their kids, grandkids and great grandkids. :D

I'm not even sure my mom remembers the Ice Truck...

But are ice cream trucks still common anywhere else? I hadn't seen one since I was a little kid, but they're all over the place up here.
