Absolutely. It was a way of life in Iowa (and most of America, for that matter) through the late 1950's.
Hell, my mother, to this day, still refers to the refrigerator as the "ice box."

I'm old-but you know what?
Life was GREAT back then. I have no complaints now, but MAN, was life ever so sweet in those days.

Anybody ever hear the Statler Brothers song "Do You Remember These?"

Nope, our high tech GE fridge had a nifty little ice box thing in the one top corner - 2 trays of ice cubes and maybe a popsicle or 2. :D

While I know what it is, we didn't have a freezer that needed it. But loved ice from those metal ice cube trays with the handle to empty 'em. :D

We didn't need it either, but we would hang around during the summer to get a small piece of ice to s*** on.

And boy, those ice cube trays could be difficult to open!

don't remember the ice man. this doesn't mean we didn't have one.

i do remember the milk man. especially in the winter. he would always get stuck in our driveway before the sun would come up. his tires would spin in the snow. i'm sure he let out just a few choice words. or if it was really cold, you had to be up when he delivered. otherwise the fat would rise from the freezing milk and then the paper top would come off.

after the milk man disappeared we kept the milk box in it's spot and it became our mailbox.

may dad who is 80, has a thing about ice. he ALWAYS has to have the ice trays and the box that holds the loose cubes full. i swear it goes back to "the ice box" days.
