What a crock of sh!t!
The Vice Chancellor for Student Success is Jim Henderson. He "confirmed there's no official policy governing the treatment of short-term military deployments. Still, each year he e-mails professors urging them to accommodate students called to military duty."
Reading that, I think he recognizes there is a problem.
I'm going to e-mail and thank him for recognizing the problem and encourage him to implement an "official policy governing the treatment of short-term military deployments."
"UCCS is establishing an office this fall to handle issues for active military, veterans and family members" but that doesn't help the students that were penalized last year. Faculty members that failed to make accomodations for deployed students because using the excuse that they "think some makeup work can't be effectively replicated, such as a group presentation" should be reviewed.
I'm going to copy my state senator and state representative to make sure that they understand that there is a problem.
Vice Chancellor Henderson's phone number is (719)262-3582. His e-mail address is jhenders@uccs.edu

Shameful...this is reflective of how some professors are showing their support of the US Military (and/or their Political opinions).
Just because they can.
Unfortunately, they are hurting individuals rather than making the "larger" statement they probably intend.
Elrod's suggestion of requesting a change in legislation to protect individual students from this type of discrimination is probably the only realistic hope for change.

My comment isn't aimed at you Wayne...I'm just so aghast by the professors' stupidity based on missing only two weeks' work....
Good luck with your efforts, Elrod!!

The only petition I could find was students collecting signatures on campus.ragtopW wrote:and E if you find the Petition and I qualify to sign let me know..
If I can find anything online, I'll pass it along.
I copied the representative and the senator on the e-mail this morning.Dezdmona wrote:Elrod's suggestion of requesting a change in legislation to protect individual students from this type of discrimination is probably the only realistic hope for change.
The senator never served in the military and his real job is college professor. The representative received the Excellence in Service Award from the National Guard Foundation. I see it 50/50, but wait: this is an election year.
